Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check oil level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used to pre-fill filters on many Chevrolet and Fords.

I wonder if there is any benefit from an accusump for owners with prolonged periods between use of their car, I believe that with the electrical solenoid attachment , when the key is turned the accusump is activated and gives 35psi pressure until the engine fires and pressure from the oil pump reaches that amount then oil is forced back into the accusump cylinder for the next time, also during driving conditions if oils pressure is lost , say while your doing a doughnut on the beach!!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 99 has been parked since around Halloween, but I might break it out for the weekend with temperatures warming up and the roads being mostly bare.
Any precautions for the first start up in 3 months? Wise to remove the EFI relay and crank a few times or does that do anything other than make me thing it helps?
Running 5W40 Edge. Temperature will probably be around 10C or so in the garage.
Jake had a post about this a while back. Essentially, as I remember he suggested cold cranking wasnt the answer to circulating oil. I beleive he said what he does at startup of a new motor was to crank till "just" fired, then shut off quickly and repeat a few times.
Good grief, no.
Why heat the engine and encourage even more oil to drain away from the bearing surfaces.
OP: Just start the engine. The starting process is designed to get the oil circulating promptly. That is one reason why we see these engines -- even when started warm -- run up to nearly 2K then drop back down to a fast (1K) cold idle. That initial run up to nearly 2K gets the gear pump spinning and gets the oil flowing promptly. Also, it helps create the hydradynamic bearing (essentially oil under pressure) from the residual oil that is present. This is sufficient to protect engine bearings until the oil from the pump reaches the bearings. Bear in mind the oil pump is not that far away from the main/rod bearings while the oil pressure gage sensor is about as far away from the oil pump as it can be so while none to little oil pressure is registering on the oil pressure gage the mains/rods have a good dose of oil.
Oiling needs cold are low too. Just about 1.5 bar (or even a bit less) with a hot engine is quite enough oil pressure to adequately lube the engine and cold the engine needs even less at cold idle.
BTW, the time to worry about the engine's first start after a longish hibernation was before you put the car away. Fresh oil/filter at least.
We may be muddling 2 slightly but significantly different situations.
1. Restarting an engine that was running fine when parked but has been idle for a few months
2. Starting a freshly rebuilt engine.
Very different strategy required
Most important is to listen attentively for impending disaster and look for leaks. For example -the serp belt may become stiff/brittle/oil covered on the c/s pulley if there is a leak. If you 'catch' that - no problem.
Correct .But there is more -a mea culpa.
Jake kindly corrected a mistaken idea (include me) that pre-filling the oil filter was a good idea. It is noteworthy that others agreed with the incorrect advice(with the best of intentions I am sure). Embarrassingly , Jake had to intervene to explain why it was a mistaken recommendation.Thank you .
On every other engine I have done, it would have been O.K. or even a good idea. The M96, not so much apparently.

That accusump will kick in and provide pressure while the normal oil pickup is starved of oil, good for track days I would say!! Not heard much about these on rennlist but I think that could be good for our cars and I'm thinking of one for mine, might help with worn lifters and chain tensioners too , pumping them up that little bit sooner to stop chain rattle and noisy lifters , what do you guys think??
Make sure the battery has charge, maybe hook up a trickle charger on the battery the night before to make sure it's up to full voltage. Nothing worse than wanting to drive but not being able to because of a dead battery. Or it might have enough charge to start up and get you somewhere then not start!
Also don't drive hard (over 4k?) before the engine is up to normal operating temperature, this is standard anyway.
If you want to build up oil pressure so things are not spinning relatively dry, find a relay that runs the ECU or the injectors and pull it. Then crank it for about 10 seconds followed by re installing the relay/s. Otherwise just fire it up and go for a drive.
Please explain - These Porsche's are interesting in that knowledge specific to these cars is often times specific to these cars. I used to pre-fill filters on many Chevrolet and Fords.
