Suggestion

When I had the oil change done by a friend mechanic he noticed white spots around where the water pump is - he suspects that a gasket needs to be replaced - the car has about the same 11K miles - he spoke to his friends at the Porsche dealer, and they confirm that quite a few gaskets needed replacing not only for the water pump, but other things.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

At 11k had my check engine light come on brought it to the dealer who says the catalytic converter is bad and by the way the water pump sounds shot....has anyone heard of these problems with only 11k (Cayman S ,2006)

POST 2Original post

Welcome to the club. The CEL on the cat converters was not uncommom on the early build 2006s. They have since gone to better catalytic converters, so when you bring your car in you'll get the new improved parts. I've never once heard a thing about water pumps. That would be a first. Your car is under warranty and will be repaired, so don't sweat it. Hope this helps.

POST 3Original post

Thanks The converter didn't phase me but the water pump I thought was uncommon. I wonder if that was the noise I have been hearing since new, used to have a m6 not used to a noisy car...don't get me wrong I really like this car just nervous about repairs at 11k

POST 4Original post

Nothing to be worried about. On the noise thing, Porsches are noisy by design. A sports car that is quiet is a bad thing. When you're on the track, being able to hear the tires is a benefit. Isolating that would remove one of the valuable 'feedbacks' that the car provides. That's why Porsches aren't quiet.

POST 5Original post

I've had 3 catalytic converters replaced on my 06 CS so far. I'm waiting for one more warning light for the 4th.......

POST 6Original post

Supercharged, the cats aren't bad they just need to do 2 things. 1) replace with 600 cel cats 2) Update your DME programming to the October 2006 or newer version (less sensitive to O2 values) That will make this problem go away. As an option you could always get aftermarket ECU programming from Softronic and that would cure it as well, but 1 and 2 should be covered under warranty.

My car is now in storage for the winter, and I will be doing the 2 year maintenance in Apr. next year and will ask them to fix this issue at the same time.
