Oh and replaced the metal hood ornament with a sticker (lol!).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wondering if the GT3 door panels that remove the air bag are easy to source.
How much weight would be saved and would we be able to silence the air bag light that it would trigger.
I'm feeling frisky lol
I believe the 996 GT3 and GT3RS (both street cars) come with door airbags. The inner door cards just have a pocket instead of a lower speaker. I dont think even the clubsport models deleted the door card and airbag.
I have some magazine article photos I can dig up for visual verification (uk mag Total 911 did a nice 996 GT3RS spread last year - issue 161).
Some racers (full cage with door bars) delete the airbags (and other heavy bits including metal doors) to replace them with carbon fiber doors. Poke around on the Rennlist GT car forum and you can read about some. The good ones (Manthey?, IIRC) are very nice but very expensive. I think Getty and some others that cater to the race crowd make them as well. Not really a practical thing for a street car though.
The weight reduction approach Porsche took with the GT3RS was carbon fiber hood, decklid, lightweight rear glass, plus they deleted the sunroof. Oh and replaced the metal hood ornament with a sticker (lol!).
I cant remember if they also deleted some sound deadening (behind rear side and quarterpanels), but I can tell you that it adds up to a fair amount of weight, if you are on a weight reduction kick.
All of this is of questionable benefit on a street car (in my personal opinion). Of course, it matters a lot on a competition car where thousandths add up, and adding lightness is a way to get there.
Not sure youd gain much on a street car by removing the airbags. And youll make your car less safe (I guess that is stating the obvious.

This is the article that inspired me. Would love the extra storage as well lol
I'd be keeping my front air bags for what its worth.

I'm working on removing weight form the driver as we speak but figure if this was an easy factory option to add (or delete), it would be fun pursuing.
I checked the link and see that airbagless door card.
The US model didnt get that, so you may need to look abroad. We got a version with the airbag, but no door speaker.

I have these in my 996.2, the PO was into club racing and he had it set up trending toward GT3RS-ish stuff - these door cards, sprayerless headlights, Gt3RS rear decklid, rollbar, gt3 control arms and alignment, etc.
Jim010 - Im not asking because I want to buy them, but I am very curious what vehicle model and country they came from to educate myself. I might be completely wrong about what I believe to be factual.
go to ebay.co.uk (or other euro ebay sites) and look. they'll often call them door cards instead of door panels. most early, lower spec cars (esp the boxsters) came without airbags and without speakers. if you go with a boxster door panel you'll have to get new pulls, pocket lids, etc., although the actual panels will fit your car just fine. realise, however, if you are going lightweight that the airbag is attached to the door and not the panel; the airbag stuff on the panel is just a thin lid designed to blow open on airbag deployment - ie, probably lighter than a non-airbag door panel.
otherwise, if you do go for a boxster door panel, other ways to make them lighter is do delete the pocket lid, and delete the latch assembly (replace with a strap). end result is about as light as anything you could make yourself ...
Check out Ryan Hs hold me over 996 thread.
he made an ultra light weight 99 w homemade door cards out of Kydex, foam and Dynamica (another brand of alcantara).
For steering wheel swaps, you can defeat the airbag light with a 3 ohm resistor. Side airbag may be similar.
I'm going to be doing a revised version for my GT3 in the fall and my neighbor might be interested in turning it into a product we offer for sale. I'll document what we make but the next version will be fiberglass I think so we can have a mold made if we market it for sale.
Regarding defeating the airbag on the door, does it need the same resistor as the other airbags?
The same resistor works also for door airbags. I converted my car bagless with Boxster's leather door cards. Used 996's door handles and compartment covers. Needs some adjusting, but doable.
Hello Jim, sorry to revive an old thread but I am currently restoring a mk1 996 gt3 and could use a set of these airbag less / no speaker door cards.
please let me know if still available
