I've a 84,000 mile C2, which at tick-over gives out a very slight bearing rumble, turned out to be the alternator bearing.
Leading evidence: 'alternator bearing' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'alternator bearing' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend remanufactured or new' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also, what do people recommend - remanufactured or new from Porsche?

OPC have quoted £380 inc VAT to replace alternator - I'm going with that as the local independent is actually more.

Try yellow pages to see if your local car electrics company can change the bearings, brushes etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
Post number one, 3 weeks into 911 ownership!
I've a 84,000 mile C2, which at tick-over gives out a very slight bearing rumble, turned out to be the alternator bearing. With the belt removed, there's obvious play in the pulley - it moves in and out by 1mm or so with a slight 'clunk'. The noise is only there at tick-over, and when revved above 1000rpm it disappears.
The voltage is good at 14V with the engine running, and the temp sits at 82 all the time.
Does anyone know if this is something that should be fixed immediately, or is it ok to drive as long as the sound doesn't get worse? Also, what do people recommend - remanufactured or new from Porsche?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Haig
Movement in and out(endfloat) is acceptabe)I do not know what the tolerence is.This will be controlled by a thrust washer which is designed to wear due to the axial load to the rear of the unit. This may be the issue and thus allowing too much movement. If this is the case the rest of the unit will be on its way. All sevicable.
Movement up and down(bearing play)not so good.
If it rumbles when you spin it, it should be almost silent, with the belt removed then the bearings are on their way out. A shot of wd40 into the front bearing will quiet this down although not a fix just confirmation of diagnosis.Try lifting the pulley up and down to calculate the play. Note it will grumble more when the alternator is loaded up with current draw.High pull items such as electric heaters h/lamps and fogs.
If you can get the Alt. off then it can be reconditioned at a low cost or exchanged. Brushes, bearings and a nice repaint will all be in the deal.
OPC may want to charge rather more for a new £10 million pound genuine part plus 4 weeks labour I feel!
Good luck.
Try and get it fixed as you could write the unit off if the rotor touches the stator. Try yellow pages to see if your local car electrics company can change the bearings, brushes etc. as recommended above - should be in the region of £100, lot cheaper than OPC. This is a job for a specialist though. OPC will just swop the unit out. You could try GSF, I know they offer alternators for older Porsches. :dont know:

Alternator replaced at Swindon OPC - £381, and all is now silent again. I didn't want to risk pulling it apart myself, and the indie I spoke to was slightly more expensive.
Also had them install a Porsche Sports Exhaust (why aren't these standard?) and mpg has already dropped to 22, but it sounds so great you just have to rev it!
Also got them to strip and refurbish the carrera alloys, so they certainly got they monies worth out of me today.
Cheers
I looked at my altenator they do looked deep routed in the engine bay!
Behave with that PSE you'll annoy the neighbours!
Did the refurb the wheels for you in house?
Was it expensive IYDMM asking?
Alternator looked 'buried' in the surrounding engine, I'd also heard that it was easy to break a cooling pipe.
£97 per wheel - acid strip then powder coat - look like new. Very pleased with the result. OPC took them off, sent to a specialist, then refitted tyres and rebalanced, then refitted - all for £97.
Switch on dash for exhaust ensures that I'll not wake the kids (or the neighbours) when I leave at six in the morning. Amazed with the result - not had the stereo on since!
Cheers
