Reported cause

Well done on the fix - mine used to creak and rattle and found that it came from the passenger airbag housing then I found another one at 170+mph, it was the interior light fitting resonating.

Sooooo, I removed the speakers from the top of the dash and when I pulled on the harness running east west under the dash it make the same noise.

Suggestion · Original poster

Cracked it - stripped all sealing rubbers off the screen and applied silicon to everything (including removing the scuttle plate trim and lubing the botttom run of screen sealer).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know what causes this? It is a high frequency squeak coming from the top of the dash near to the join with the bulkhead and screen. I have so far removed the vent trim that runs the full length of the dash in this area and soaked everything with silicon but to no avail. Help, this is making my car fell cheap and I don't like it one bit.

POST 2Original post

do you know if the windscreen has been replaced?

POST 3Original post

Could well be the rubber seal around the outer edge of the windscreen, it rubs against the glass and it sounds like its coming from the dash inside the car. Suggest you lift up the edges of the seal and spray underneath with silicon and see if the squeak disappears. If it does you have at least identified the problem but the silicon spray is only a short term fix (it washes away) and you will need to get someone to fit silicon tape between the glass/rubber seal. As Andyc suspects, it usually occurs when the windscreen is replaced by someone not knowing what they doing

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks very much, I'll give it a go.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cracked it - stripped all sealing rubbers off the screen and applied silicon to everything (including removing the scuttle plate trim and lubing the botttom run of screen sealer). No good, noise still there. Sooooo, I removed the speakers from the top of the dash and when I pulled on the harness running east west under the dash it make the same noise. Applied a liberal coat of silicon - cured. Thank goodness, the car sounds quality again.

POST 6Original post

Well done on the fix - mine used to creak and rattle and found that it came from the passenger airbag housing then I found another one at 170+mph, it was the interior light fitting resonating. That took some finding whilst trying to keep my eye on the road as you can never tell exactly where the sounds are coming from in the car. :cop: (This actual event occured whilst in Germany on the Autobahn on a unrestricted stretch whilst a friend looked for the fault) :cop:
