Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, I have this idea in my mind and I would like to ask your opinion. I own a 996 3.6 cabrio since new (22 years). 200.000 km on the clock; engine rebuild at 185.000. I used it as daily car for 15 years, then after engine rebuilt only as weekend car. I was considering to sell it to buy a 930, but I had this idea: sell my modern daily BMW, buy the 930 and use 996 as daily. I drive less than 10k km at year; 10/15 km at day is my normal use. Home - work; work - gym are my usual route and are all places with private parking. To go in the centre of the city on the night I usually use taxi and my longest route is to go to my holiday house 30 kilometers from here. For long trips I go with train or airplane; however Im sure my 996 can do a trip of 3/400 km without problems if needed (and if I dont want to use I can always rent a car). Whats your opinion? Thank you

POST 2Original post

I'm assuming you live somewhere without tons of salt on the roads during the winter. Salty roads would be a no go for me. You've got a pretty freshly rebuilt engine (hopefully with the main gremlins taken care of - nikkies, UAOS, Water pump, fuel injectors, plugs etc...) So as long as the rest of the car is in decent condition, dailying it seems totally fine as long as you've got the budget for pcar maintenance (and if you're looking at selling your bimmer for a 930 it sounds like you do).

POST 3Original post

Ive been dailying my 996 for 4 weeks straight now, close to 300 miles per week. My biggest complaint is the fuel tank size, got used to the 22 gallon tank in my Panamera. My kids and friends are approaching 6 so they bitch a bit but 95% of the time, its just me. I am ready to put the Panamera back to daily status though; bigger tank size and the seats are way better.

Here where I live it doesnt snow, and yes, a lot of components are new (including modified IMS) Car runs perfectlyif I will take the decision to use as daily I think I will do service every 6 months instead every yearjust to be sure everything is fine.

POST 5Original post

I just completed a year of daily driving my 996.2 Targa....Gym, Grocery stores, downtown driiving, etc. In that time coolant tank and fuel pump went out. Unlike you if your 996 breaks down You can drive something else. Its my only car, so my down time was 2 weeks. No bigger since I am close to my gym and stores, and uber to places is close as well. As I go now on a year and 2 months, made an appt with Indy to get oil change, 2 weeks before appt. Small puddle started forming under water pump...You know were I am going here....Water pump, thermostat, Hoses and flush, oil change. 1 week down time. Indy tells one my fans is not working at low speeds only, high speed is fine with AC turned on and will need to be replaced. I can get away with it over the Az winter but as it hits 90 degrees I need to change it out. Service needed within the next 6 months will be clutch, IMS, RMS, PS leaking, and fan...... My 996.2 Targa has been great as a daily driver but like all cars they need to be maintained to be daily drivers....I will be biking to the gym from now on , until it gets hot. The gym is too close and its takes longer to warm up the car to get there, so I will save it for longer runs over 20 minutes plus... PS I had the room and tools to do my own work, all the items need would have been done sooner, but my repairs have been at the Indies here, $$$$

POST 6Original post

If your car is in good condition, go for it. I use my 99 C2 for commuting and have never had a problem. The car has 180k miles and is still going strong.

I understand what you meanhowever in my car many components are new, including fuel and water pump. Clutch too is new. Engine has been rebuilt 15k km ago. However my insurance would provide me a substitute car in case of some mechanical problem. Porsche center too here can give a replacement car.

Here in Italy we have a club for classic cars (at least 20 years old) called ACI that you can join and that integrates the insurance policy. It costs about 100 per year and in the event of a breakdown, up to 3 roadside assistances are included in the price, as well as a replacement car. You can combine 3 cars of your own with your membership card.

POST 10Original post

There is no better way to keep up the maintenance and care for a Porsche 996 than to daily drive it... When you drive it daily you can take better care of the car because you know everything going on with it can tell when something is not right and get it taken care of immediately and not put if off and let things pile up... The cars I have seen that are in the worst shape are the ones that are driven infrequently...Little things go wrong that are ignored,...maintenance that is put off....rubber that dry rots ect.. All rubber parts have lubricants dissolved in the rubber that need to be exersized...If the rubber ( tires , rubber bushings , hoses , suspension parts ect.) are not excersized, the lubricants will vaporize starting from the outside air exposure, excersizing the rubber through normal driving will make the lubricants dessolved in the rubber to come to the surface to help prevent dry-rot and they will last considerably longer....If rubber parts are left to sit, they will dry-rot much much faster... Cars are built/designed to be driven.........

There is an estimated 100-200 billion galaxies The speed of light is ~186,000 miles per second The earth's total circumference is around 25,000 miles (just for reference) We are one of approximately 2,500 solar systems in our own galaxy (and there is estimated to be many more) Voyager 1 was launched in the 70's, is moving at about 38,000mph, and just left our solar system in 2012. It would take around 100,000 human / how-you-and-I perceive years to get to the edge of the milky way galaxy, if you were traveling at the speed of light. You spend around 75 years on this planet, if you're lucky. Get in your 996 and drive it. Whenever you can, and however often you can. I use this analogy when deciding on trivial things, and almost always end up saying "f*ck it, yes" Edit- another fun fact - the great pyramid of Giza's numerical latitude is an exact - exact - match to the speed of light in meters per second.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

During this day Im using daily my 996 to give a try and Im convincing myself is the right thing to do. Moreover, I wrote on my first post Im looking to subsitute my Bimmer with a 930. During these days Im thinking to search a 997 TT instead a 930, so I will have 2 daily cars. Ill keep you updated.

POST 14Original post

I 'daily' my 996. But that means just gym, occasional grocery run or for errands. Out of my 911s it's the most suitable (and practical) to daily drive.

POST 15Original post

I’m with the drive it every day group. As far as a Porsche goes, the 996 is affordable for wear-and-tear maintenance. A 996 makes driving around for work or errands fun. A 997 Turbo is boss. ‘Practical’ and outrageous at the same instant.

POST 16Original post

My 996 is the only car I own. Its my daily. About 12k per year. When I cracked the head, I bought a 335 for 6k, drove it for a month, sold that, drove a rental, then drove my moms car, then picked up my 911 a few weeks ago after it was fixed. Now being dailyd again. I love this car

POST 17Original post

For sure use it as a daily and a vacation car! I drove mine to work and back for 17 years and it is still my go-to- car to drive to Yosemite. I would still drive it every day had I not got bitten by the electric car bug, so now it's my Friday car. You can't go wrong with either the 930 or the 997 TT. I'm currently searching for something much less practical: a 1959 Convertible D.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 19796047

Owning both, I have to say the 997TT (and assumedly, if you have a 996TT) is wayyyyyy better for grocery duties. Not for any comfort or noise reason but for the sole fact that the turbo engine warms up fast. 175F oil in 6-8min and it stays warm for hours, so the engine spends much more of its life evaporating fuel and water, vs the M96 which needs 15-20min to come up.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 19798430

Hmm, weird I don't recall this being the case having owned several of each. If you're comparing just direct examples of your personal car(s), perhaps the non-turbo had the blend doors going bad? Very common problem, and does result in less heat, and less immediate heat as well. Ditto for lower temp thermostat, very common mod on the Carrera cars. Just some thoughts

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 19804197

I've been in numerous 996/997 lately thanks to doing custom pieces for people, the trend is there. And no, I couldn't care less about HVAC - warm oil is for the Carreras to preserve their cylinder bores.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: I decided to use daily my 996 and, instead of a 930, last week I bought a 997 TT manual transmission. So, it seems now I have 2 daily cars!
