Those who buy used turbos do so because they don't have a couple hundred thousand for a new one.

I figured I'd replace the idea of getting that and get the 911 turbo or the Mclaren.

As for the McLaren, I beg you to test drive it before anything else.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took this car for a drive.. I really liked it for several reasons. It was quite different from my current Boxster
GTS
(My
gts
sounds waaaaaaaaaaaay better) but aside from that, there were differences that I liked in both cars. This turbo can definitely move and I also liked the looks of this particular build. The thing is.. I don't have enough information to go by in order to make the purchase. I've been looking for a really in depth review online but all I get is the Turbo S review or the 2015 or 2017 review turbo. With my
gts
, there were tons of reviews online in the form of articles and video alike. I've spent hours and I've only seen 1 video review and very short 1 paragraph reviews from sites I'm not familiar with.
I know that many of us have our favorites such as the Boxster or Cayman models which is understandable, but I'm looking for year to year comparisons between the 2015, 2016 or 2017 models of the Turbo only. If anyone may have some input, I'd appreciate it. Is it a step forward or a step back? Is 2016 the year to go for or 2017 and why? This sticker is 178,000. I can grab it for 168k and the only thing that this car doesn't have from my personal build on the porsche config site is that it has the
bose
rather than the
burmester
that I'm used to.
Thank you all in advance.
GT Porsche had an in depth review of the car in their March 2016 edition, which I think would give you a lot of answers. 2017 should be the updated gen2,: new styling tweaks, Apple integration and more bhp. Car is definitely a step forward, so no concern there. Only question I'd ask is have you looked at alternatives at the same price point? GT3, Mc Laren 570S, DB11?
I'll look into picking up a copy tomorrow.
I've been looking at the Mc Laren 570s for the past few days and I'm going to check them out at the dealership this coming Tuesday. After a test drive, I should know which way I'm going to go. I picked up Motortrend and TopGear U.K edition mags today which both have articles on the 570s (and GT) so those should lend a hand in tipping the scales one way or another. I tried looking into the GT3 but my local Porsche dealer said that he can't even order them and supposedly, that was it. They are already being listed online with 300k asking prices or more so that's out. I really like the look of the Mc Laren so if the video reviews are right and it drives as good as it looks, I may lean towards that. Maybe keep my Boxster
GTS
and have the Mc Laren to keep it company.
Thank you for the info. Much appreciated.
Can't remember the mag, but they had a head to head of the 570S vs the 911. Think the conclusion was that the 570S was more special, but the 911 more practical. If you were to keep the Boxster, I'd look at the 911 as you'd have a rear vs mid engined., coupe vs cab,
PDK
vs mt, turbo vs na set up. However for me, I think I'd take a Mc Laren over a 911, though can say the 911 makes a great dd. not a bad problem to have.
******** has an active Turbo forum. You'll find lots of turbo info there. With the exception of the 993 and 996 and the air cooled preference amongst many 911 enthusiasts, the latest model is always better. Those who buy used turbos do so because they don't have a couple hundred thousand for a new one. So if you like and can afford a turbo, buy the latest model that you can afford.
Well if you're shopping for 200k cars, I don't think I could give you any arguments about value, but in my opinion your boxster
GTS
is too similar experience unless you're looking for a faster track toy or simply must have a 911 for nameplate.
If I had this much money, I would be looking at other cars...such as the McLaren mentioned.
great feedback from everyone. I was starting to think the same thing in regards to the Boxster/911 being a similar experience. I know they have their differences though. My
GTS
sounds much better (not fair since it's an NA engine) but the turbo moves with purpose.. When I take those
points
away.. the two look somewhat similar in design and they are both black and white ( I love the dynamic look in contrast) and the interiors are similar as well. Once its looked at that way.. the only big upside for the turbo is that its faster but I'm not a track guy (yet) and I don't see myself doing 200+ on the highway with my record as is.
With the Mclaren, I'm now leaning towards that as well. It's a completely different look and a completely different feel according to most. The steering is supposed to be amazing when transferring everything on the road to the driver. I cant wait to check it out this Tuesday. When you engage the Sport or Track modes, it supposedly opens the car right up and really takes off the training wheels. I have a feeling that I'm going to be a Porsche/Mclaren owner in the near future.
Thanks once again for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. These forums are always helpful.
Dear OP,
I apologize for missing your thread although I'm subscribed to 911 forum but it seems I missed it.
I'll address your inquiry shortly. But meanwhile I'll lead you to few threads that'll sum things up:

Dear OP, after 10 months of ownership and 20,000 km on the odometer I can write tens of happy pages about a blessed experience in the saddle of a turbo. I hope the links above could give you a glimpse of how wonderful it is.
In this post, I'll address your questions with few twists.
The difference between 991.1 and 991.2 regarding the turbo non-S is clearly 20hp, few cosmetics in and out that I care less about... except for the Apple Play. IMHO, that doesn't justify the premium to switch/upgrade in my case. If I were you, I may opt for 2014/15 and save the money. If we are talking about the changes between 991.1 and 991.2 turbo S, I'd say the turbo sizes increase between the two facelift generations is something not to be ignored. If we are talking about from turbo to turbo S within the 991.1 I say it's a waste of money. I did beat a turbo S in my non-S by simply adding
COBB
tune for 2k USD or so. And I loaded my turbo with everything I want on the configurator and still saved a good amount.
As for the McLaren, I beg you to test drive it before anything else. I test drove the 650S not 570S, and the turbo lag was something from the dark ages. Every 991 turbo owner was disappointed from test driving the 650S that day. And I remember reading one wondering, "if McLaren didn't have flying doors would it ever sell..!" However, if the McLaren did hit your hot spot, I highly recommend you wait a year or two and buy it used. Nothing depreciates as bad as McLaren. And even brand new ones can be bought for 2/3 of the sticker price here in KSA... simply they want to sell them.
I'll add more competition here... Let's talk about the Huracan. I test drove both the 610-4 and 580-2. I extremely loved it especially with racing
exhaust
feature. But all it takes is to go on reverse once to hate your life in it. It's ridiculous with the limited rear visibility. Even the reverse camera is useless. I have a friend who was obsessed with Huracan and I ended closing a deal on his behalf, but in the last day he bought... a 991 turbo S that I had no hand in. His words was: "I bought the turbo inspired by your and yours." However, I have another friend who changes cars as often as I change shoes is looking to trade in his 991 turbo for a Huracan... just for the sake of trying it.
Let me tell you why you should NOT buy a 991 turbo IMO... only if you're on the Waiting List for a 991 GT2 RS. I'm on the waiting list and it does make me regret buying a turbo for the money I'll be losing when I do the trade in. But if I don't get it, my next sports car will be the future 99X turbo from the coming generation.
Let me add more zest here, IMHO there is no car ever created (hyper cars aside) more beautiful than the 991 GT3 RS. For the love of God, I can't stop drooling on it ever since I came face to face with those beasts on the track... yet, I won't buy it instead of my turbo after beating them on Yas Marina Circuit. I know this may stir dislikes here, but facts are facts, the 991 GT3 is NOT a competitor to the turbo on the track and the 991 GT3 RS looked its best in the turbo's rearview mirror.
Any more questions, feel free to ask... It'll be my pleasure.
Thank you for providing all that information. There were some interesting stories there.
The other thing I forgot to mention is that I have the first reserved Mission E in New England supposedly. We thought it was going to come out in 2017 but now we're being told it will arrive in either 2019/2020. That being said, I figured I'd keep the deposit on it as one never knows what happens in the future. I figured I'd replace the idea of getting that and get the 911 turbo or the Mclaren. I took the Mclaren 570s out today and the 911 turbo feels like its on a different level in terms of build quality and performance. The 570s was quick and felt like a real sports car (stiffer and the steering was great too) but I'm torn between the 2 cars. I also read as you had pointed out that the Mclarens tend to drop like rocks in terms of value very quickly but seeing as how I have no plans of trading it once I get it (if thats what I end up with) I'm not overly concerned. From a quality standpoint, Porsche feels like they are way beyond most manufactures in terms of a quality feel.
I looked into getting a GT3 RS but I can't see paying what everyone seems to be asking for them. 300k for a car that a 911 turbo outperforms? Nah.. I would have paid the original list price most likely but that's where I draw the line on that one. If the mission E came out in 2017, I would't even have started this thread. lol
Thank you all once again for all the feedback and the knowledge guys/gals.
