Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Have you considered the increased force required to change gear for the more extreme travel reductions - whatever travel reduction you go for is also the force increase.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Has anyone swapped from the standard gear change to the short shift? they all look the same but the reduction ranges from 20% - 40%! Any thoughts?

POST 2Original post

I remember from the brochures at the time that the gt2 has a 20% shorter throw. I'd have thought that'd be a good way to go. I'm sure you could get the original part.

POST 3Original post

If you are set on installing the factory kit the 997 short shift kit is a simpler and reversible install and fits into the 996. The 997 kit comes complete with housing and adjustment bracket whereas the 996 kit is shifter and bushes and requires the destruction of the original bushes. Part number for the 997 kit is 997 424 983 00 - Should be around £256 after club discount. The 996 kit number is 996 424 983 00 (Now unavailable) and superseded by the 997 part was £385.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been looking on 'Design 911 UK' and they have three, ranging from £138-£266. yes, the GT2 has 20% reduction but, is 20% too little and 40% too much?

POST 5Original post

I fitted the standard 997 gear shift into my 996 - shortens the travel by 15 % - feels great & the effort increase is acceptable even with cold car in winter. Standard 997 gearshift was ~ £115 2 yrs ago via local OPC inc Porsche Club discount & is also reversible mod as comes as complete kit. Have you considered the increased force required to change gear for the more extreme travel reductions - whatever travel reduction you go for is also the force increase. Regards & happy hunting. POST 6Original post

I will say they 986/996 SS kit can be heavy whereas the 987/997 SS kit is much smoother/lighter. I have installed and currently use both on our cars, very different feel.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's a very good point Paul, I think the 997 short shift is the way to go! Thanks

POST 9Original post

FWIW I have had the Techart adjustable SS on my 996T for 4 years now set at its maximum reduction of 30%. Can't say I have ever thought it is ever heavy or baulky to use and IMHO, 30% is the min for this as even then, the throw for 2nd is still quite long HTH

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In Design 911 they have the Design Tech short shift for £138. On e-bay there is one that looks exactly the same for £45. Has anyone looked into this, or bought one?

POST 11Original post

I'm getting the 997 kit fitted to my 996 the week after next (I'm also getting the complete sports suspension - M030 - kit fitted too, thought I'd get the short-shift at the same time, treat myself). I'll post up my thoughts when I get the car back - mine's a daily driver (12-15k per year) so I'll be able to tell you how easy it is to live with, pretty quickly...

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great, keep me posted as mine is a daily drive also (8-10k/yr)

POST 14Original post

The £ 45 one on ebay is perfect, fitted to my 996 turbo in 2hrs, nice feel, much better than standard.

POST 15Original post

Any tips for fitting it? Does the gearchange tilt towards a mechanical feel or a smooth feel compared to standard?
