Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

At service (late Nov) I was told to use Mobil 1 but Im guessing there are various grades of this.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, My 996 C2 (73k miles) seems to have gone through quite a bit of oil in the past 3 months and needs topped up. Can anyone suggest which exact oil grade ought to be used. At service (late Nov) I was told to use Mobil 1 but Im guessing there are various grades of this. Can someone suggest the full spec please? eg. 0w-40 or 5w-40 And any reasonably priced sources would also be welcome! Thanks in advance Andrew

POST 2Original post

I will probably get shot down for this but if I remember correctly... 0w-40 for new tight engines, but after a few mile, especially if you have a little oil loss from seals etc try going for 5w-40 which is a little thicker and less likely to leak. Migh take a little longer to loosen up before you give it the beans though.

POST 3Original post

Mobil 1 0W-40 for me on advice from Camtune and GT-One. Check this thread out for costs... http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=41911 :thumb:

POST 4Original post

My vote is on 5w40 As Bubbles said, older high mileage engines seem more suited to thicker grades.

POST 5Original post

Go 5w! My old 4S liked to drink Mobil-1 0w, when I replaced it with 5w-40 Silkolene she became teatotal

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers guys! Very thirsty on the 0w so may well go down the 5w route!

POST 7Original post

Good advice Damian. My 4S arrived with Magnatec and it drank it - thought I had a serious problem. JZM put in Castrol Edge and things calmed down drammatically. OPC have just put in Mobl One - let's see how things go........... Ray :bandit:

POST 8Original post

I would, certainly in light of the warmer weather just around the corner - hopefully!
