Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

If you know how many litres you are filling the car with, it should give you an idea of how many are left in the tank when it is reading empty.

half a tank full of fuel in and set off, realised a few minutes later that the guage was still showing 'red' and empty!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

Stopped the car and turned ignition on / off a couple of times and no change.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had seen a post on this in the past....strange occurrence....had put approx. half a tank full of fuel in and set off, realised a few minutes later that the guage was still showing 'red' and empty! Stopped the car and turned ignition on / off a couple of times and no change. Worried at this point and decided to add more fuel at another station..... and now all ok! Not sure what to investigate. POST 2Original post

That's normal on a C4, C4S, Turbo, or GT3. The tank is saddle-shaped and the level sensor doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the tank. When it gets to about 20 litres from empty it calculates the level from there to empty. Therefore, if you are very low on fuel, and don't add enough to reach the sensor, it still registers empty.

Thanks for the update - was worried!

POST 4Original post

Richard, would this also account for the guage rapidly going to half-tank (sometimes I've only done something like 70 miles at this point) but then dropping more slowly later? I'm only getting around 180 miles on a tank which I'm finding a little concerning, especially as I don't think I'm being too heavy on the loud pedal. However that's probably off topic here and value for another discussion somewhere else. Cheers Chris

POST 5Original post

If you know how many litres you are filling the car with, it should give you an idea of how many are left in the tank when it is reading empty. The workshop manual shows a nominal refill volume of 64 litres, which I assume is the volume between empty and full on the gauge. If it is a long way out then it may be worth getting the instrument cluster recalibrated. This is done with a Porsche tester. I get about 200 miles to the tank on my normal daily commute across Maidenhead, but a lot more on a run.
