You can get almost all capability without changing modes anyhow.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd like to introduce myself first. I am a long time Planet-9 member, since I bough my first
Porsche
, a 986S.
Later I upgraded to a
997.2
4S.
OK, why am I posting? I am not only a long time
Porsche
owner but also an electrical engineer.
And as such I like to create electronic gadgets for my cars and some of them I have turned into products.

My latest product is a device that replaces the SportChrono gauge"
Anyone who has the SportChrono option in their 9x7 is probably wondering what to do with it. I found it 100% useless. So, I decided to make it useful.
Because the analog instruments in the dashboard are less than accurate, the main purpose of my device is to give you accurate readings on coolant temp, oil temp and oil pressure. And I figured that especially the 987 community would like to have an instrument that displays oil temp and oil pressure.
Here
are more details about it.
I am currently only selling them to 997.1 and 997.2 owners.
I see absolutely no reason why they shouldn't work on 987.1 and 987.2, but there's only one way to find out...
So I am looking for one 987.1 and one 987.2 owner who would like to give it a try.
Here's my offer: The first 987.1 and the first 987.2 owner who is willing to do that, will get a 50% discount on the device.
If it doesn't work (which is very unlikely) you can return it for a full refund.
Here are the caveats/condition:
Your car needs to have the SportChrono option (duh)
You have to have a 987.1 or 987.2
The difficulty in installing this is 3.5/10 and you need to be comfortable to physically tap into the CAN bus (please refer to the
manua
l for details)
You need to be in the US
You commit that you will install the device as soon as possible (it doesn't help me if it sits in a garage for weeks)
It doesn't matter if it's a Boxster or a Cayman
OK, how can you be a part of it?
Please contact me at
[email removed]
It will be on a first come, first serve basis and only one for each 987 version
Cheers
Chris
I have a
987.1
Cayman S
with SC &
PASM
that would be a good candidate (already have the
LED
spars installed so OEM has sailed). I might be inclined to enlist the help of my audio guy on the install although the step by step instructions and images make it seem relatively straightforward. I was staring at the SC the other day thinking would it not be nice if it served more function than a lap timer that I may never use.
The
987.1
does not have an oil pressure sender like the other models, although it's possible to add it in as in this thread:
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/oil-pressure-sensor-and-data-on-can-bus.254248/
It would be awesome to have a kit or even just instructions with the level of polish you have in your manual for installing the gauge pod itself, for installing and connecting to CAN bus, an OEM oil pressure sender.
@bredward
Oh man that sucks. I didn't realize that. That most likely takes the 987.1 out of the running. But there might still be hope for the 987.2, considering it has the 9A1 engine and not the M96/97?
I think that makes this product even more valuable to
987.1
owners like me, since we don't have any oil pressure gauge in the first place, and this is by far the most OEM solution. I have enough on my to-do list for my car at the moment, but would definitely consider buying one along with an OEM oil pressure sender in the future.
I think it’s even more valuable to Boxter and
Cayman
owners since
Porsche
decided we only needed an idiot light for OP. The coolant gauge isn’t much better because it is buffered so much.🤬
I don’t have any experience with
M96
/97 engines, but it wouldn’t suprise me if the info wasn’t on the
CAN bus
. I guess some track guys with a data logger or
Cobb
type unit need to weigh in.
If anyone with a CAN sniffer and a
987.1
wants to take a peek, here's what I'm looking for:
**
Coolant temp
***
PID 581 / 0x245 (Hex)
The data (x) is in byte 1 (I start counting at 0)
Temp (C) = (x – 64 ) * 3/4
Temp (F) = (x – 64) * 27/20 + 32
**
Oil temp
***
PID 1089 / 0x441 (Hex)
The data (x) is in byte 5 (I start counting at 0)
Temp (C) = (x – 64 ) * 3/4
Temp (F) = (x – 64) * 27/20 + 32
**
Oil pressure
***
PID 1089 / 0x441 (Hex)
The data (x) is in byte 6 (I start counting at 0)
x=0x00 = "0" on the oil pressure gauge (I guess that's 0 bar)
x=0x7F = "5" on the oil pressure gauge (I guess that's 5 bar)
I have a
Cobb Accessport
for my
987.2
with 3.4 liter. One of the benefits of the device is it provides gauges. The gauges for coolant temp, oil temp and oil pressure seem to work well. The
Accessport
is plugged into the
OBD
port. While this doesn't prove that the PID's are the same, it's certainly shows the data is available.
Sorry about the delay
and sorry about the pictures being upside down.
Point being, 987.2 S has the data. I got this from my scanner, unfortunately I don't have a CAN bus sniffer to look deeper.
I have no clue what the difference between
engine temp
and
engine temp(measured).
I'm guessing the former has some sort of smoothing applied.
Thank You, great news! And my "
987.2
tester" got the kit today and it looks very promising.
So (fingers crossed), in case you would like to see the two critical pieces of information (oil temp and pressure) that
Porsche
decided not to give you, it looks like there will be a solution available very soon (if you have a
987.2
&
SportChrono
).
I was the
987.2
”tester” for the SC wart upgrade. For the sake of transparency, I bought the unit for half price as offered in the OP with the understanding that if it didn't work I would receive a full refund.
I installed it yesterday and was able to test drive today. The unit worked exactly as described in the installation and operation guide!
I won't say any more than that, for fear of someone accusing me of pumping a product. It works for the
987.2
.
OK, I was asked by Hatsenbach for my thoughts on the device. So here you go..........
Extremely well thought out and designed.
The installation was easy and pretty much exactly as laid out in the instructions. My car does not have
PASM
, so I am still working on where to install the aux switch (for mode changes). You can get almost all capability without changing modes anyhow. If you leave it in Mode2 you have the clock and temp indication dots. When you push the sport button, it automatically goes into Mode3 (on my test) for oil and coolant temp values. So, in reality, depending on which mode you set the default on, you only miss the oil press indication or the clock if you don't use the aux switch. The indications are really well thought out.
For anyone that wants an elegant way of presenting all that info, it is the way to go IMO. I am extremely happy with the way this thing works.
Honest opinion, no pumping!
Order placed! Their website already reflects the availability for the
987.2
@Hatzenbach
Nice job not only on the product but on shipping policies for your Canadian friends. Not only is it not exorbitant but you ship via USPS which is really helpful for us.
Answers in red. PM me and I can share you the full (99%) .dbc
I'd love to share notes as I have the 997/987/986/996 almost completely reverse engineered at this point. I wish I had the sport chrono gauge as I would absolutely test this.
Folks - note that
@Hatzenbach
is not a Planet-9 vendor. Not being one he can't advertise devices for sale, or answer public questions about buying one. That was a very carefully worded sentence - re-read it if you don't understand.
Meanwhile, I'm sure he's in contact with the intergalactic mothership sales associates at
https://www.planet-9.com/business/
- an alternative also could be sales through an already paid vendor on Planet-9.
I don't make the rules, but I don't make any money enforcing them either so...
Thanks. Yes that's exactly why I started this thread. I have a
997.2
and it - obviously - works there. Then I tested in on a
997.1
, works also. And then I had the idea to ask the Planet-9 community for help to see if it works on
987.1
/2. Result:
987.1
: no-go,
987.2
works as designed.
Thanks to everyone who helped me with that and I keep appreciating the ongoing feedback I get. Through this I keep learning more about 987 and actually the whole 997/987 platform.
By mutual agreement, at the suggestion of
@Hatzenbach
- this thread is being locked. I believe I've left enough clues for people. If anything changes - I'll reopen it.
