FWIW I also replaced my car stereo yesterday. But it worked fine and I used the correct harnesses.

Then I disconnected the batter for a while, reconnected and still, No Start.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
27 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Just bought this 02 996 cab last week. Yesterday I changed the oil and filter (no metal shavings in the filter) and I changed the air filter. Shortly after changing the air filter I got the following codes:
P0830 - Clutch pedal encoder
P0492- Secondary- air system, bank 2
P0491- Secondary- air system, bank 1
I drove the car home and it started raining pretty bad on the way home. Went through a puddle and the red light popped up "Failure roll-over protection" and "airbag failure".
Parked the car in my garage and when I went to start it this mourning all the lights lit up as normal,as did the airbag and rollover warnings but when I turn the starter to the start position it doesn't turn over the motor. (?)
So I read that you could bypass the clutch switch. I went down and saw that the red switch had already been disconnected. I then cut the two wires going to the white switch and sliced them together. (Orange with Yellow/red)
Then I disconnected the batter for a while, reconnected and still, No Start.
How can I get it to start?
I'll admit I'm new to the Porsche world, but I've owned many convertibles. This problem reminds me of my old 9-3 SAAB convertible. Problems I've had was from water ingress into the cabin affecting electrical areas. I found that a lot of the drains were clogged and causing all kinds of weird faults. Personally, I wouldn't rush and start cutting wires. I would let the car dry out completely. Do you garage it all the time? Do you have a scanner? I purchase a relatively cheap Autel scanner for my European cars. I know the Durametric is the scanner of choice around here, but I've found the Autel works great to identify faults.
Fuse E1 was blown. And as soon as I turn the ignition key it re-blows fuse E1.
E1: Terminal 86 S, instrument cluster, radio, daytime driving light, control modules for central locking, alarm system, information system, roll-over sensor..
Wow- That is a lot of stuff.
FWIW I also replaced my car stereo yesterday. But it worked fine and I used the correct harnesses. Maybe I should remove the new stereo and start from scratch.
Any idea what I should do now?
I think I would start with the last thing touched and move to roll bar protection and alarm system. Got any water under the seat (where the alarm unit is)?
You may want to get a smart fuse (lights up once blown) then unplug the suspicious components one by one and see which one will make the LED go out.
BTW, the P0830 is complaining about your red clutch switch (for cruise control) and it shouldn't be related to no-start issue. You mentioned it was unplugged so perhaps that's what tripped the P0830.
Thanks, Ahsai. I'll give that a try. Never heard of a smart fuse, guess I'll amazon one.
FYI: The top was up when it rained, but the carpet in the back is damp.
I'm going to remove the seats and thoroughly dry out the interior of the car. I hope I don't have to fork out $600 for one of these things.
If the top was up, how did water get into the car?
I thought I was going to remove the seats, however, the seats have decided to stop working. Checked the fuse (E4) and it was good. I have the battery disconnected now waiting for 30 minutes and then seeing if the seat will magically begin working again. What else can I check on my seat to make it work? I almost forgot how much fun German cars can be.
Maybe someone can post an image (diagram of sorts) that maps out all the drains on these cars? I know from my past experiences with my convertibles, especially my old SAAB 9-3, water ingress can be attributed to poor drainage. The drains get blocked and the water ingresses into the cabin. And because many of the manufacturers put modules under the seats, you get to inherit all kinda electronic hell.
Your car will never start with the roll over sensor active. It's a safety thing. Once you get the seat out, and get the ECU disconnected, dry it carefully, if you can drain any water do that too. Get a can of De-Ox-It and spray both the connectors liberally. When you insert the connector back into the module, operate the insertion and removal several times to try to burnish the contactors on both ends. Attach the battery, and make sure it is full charged. Wait for at least 30 seconds then turn the key to on but not start. Check for all the annunciators to come on, and make sure the rollover sensor lamp goes off. If it stays on, you are likely going to need a new module.
Edit; I found the electrical diagnostic for the roll over protection circuit:

Test point 1
Warning light of roll-over
Short to ground Fault code 1This fault is stored in the memory if there is an open circuit or short to ground in the supply lead to the warning light in the instrument cluster.
1. Check bulb and replace if necessary.
2. Check wire to pin 12 for open circuit. Pull plug off the roll-over protection control module. Pull off plug III on the instrument cluster. Measure resistance between plug on roll-over protection control module pin 12 and plug III on instrument cluster pin 16 Short to ground

Test point 2
Warning light of roll-over
Fault code 2
This fault is stored in the memory if there is a short to B+ of the supply lead to the warning light in the instrument cluster.
1. Pull off plug on control module and plug III on instrument cluster.
Switch ignition on. Measure voltage between plug on roll-over protection control module pin 12 and ground
Test point 3
Supply voltage Fault code 3
This fault is stored in the memory if the supply voltage is insufficient.
1. Examine battery and alternator.
2. Inspect the plug connection on the control module for corrosion.
Great info. Right now I can not get the drivers seat to work at all. Both switches are inoperable. And because the seat was all the way back I can only remove the front bolts. Got an idea as to how I can get the rear bolts out?
FUSE E1 is the only one that is blowing. All of the others are good.
Thanks, will check those after I get this other stuff fixed.
So I waited for 30 minutes with the battery unhooked. I changed fuse E1. Hooked up the battery. No warning lights and the car started right up. Then Fuse E1 blew, the car continued to run but the red warnings about the air bags and the rollover came on. When I turned the motor off it would not re-start.
So my seats will not move. I can't remove them because the rear seat bolts are covered up. I can put in a new fuse and start the car, the fuse will then blow and the red warning lights will illuminate.
Is there something that I can reach from the front of the seats and unplug? Any idea as to why the seat motors stopped working over night?
Yes, they did not work. I'm going to leave a fan running with everything unplugged over night and hopefully I can get the seat to work by tomorrow. I spoke with a Porsche mechanic and he said that if my windows, top, radio instrument etc were still working that my immobilzer is probably still good but may have a grounding issue.
HA! Came home, re installed another fuse and the car started up and the seats worked. I've since removed the seat and plan on cleaning up and drying out the immobilizer. There is a ground there under the seat that appears to have some surface rust. My plan is to clean it all up very well and then clean the drain holes. Fingers crossed, I hope this works.
My evil genius mind has come up with an incredible idea. I'm about to try it. I'll only post it if it works. Fingers crossed. If everything goes well I may something that all of you may want to use. Or I may end up forking out a Lot of cash for replacement parts. lol
Used to use this stuff on my RC seaplane. Allows electronics to completely submerge and still be good to go. I just sprayed this entire unit and re-installed. So far so good.
Hi, Im currently having this exact same issue. Is there anything else you did beyond spraying the circuit board with the product pictured and cleaning off the grounds? Everything still working as it should? Thanks!
