Over the
next
few months I will periodically need to store my
Cayman
outdoors (Not on the street). I am wondering if there is anything I should do in regards to that. I may get a tarp cover for it, but I can't justify getting a 1k+ outdoor cover for it. Is it There is a tree ~8m from where it will be parked which will drop leaves on it. I've never seen or found a branch or stick snap off it though. I'm not too worried about the paint, as I will be giving it a full makeover towards the end of this year in preparation for the
Pirelli
Porsche
Series. Is the tarp cover worth doing? And is there anything else I should do?
I'd buy a proper cover if you're considering covering it, I would not use a tarp. I'm not sure where you came up with a grand for a cover, in fact someone here was selling one I think for $150, a coverking too. I have and inside coverking and outside coverking, great fit and quality. The issue with a cover is I would want it off every 24 hours to release any moisture buildup. There's also keeping the cover clean, especially the paint side. You might decide you're better off letting it sit uncovered and increasing your wash / wax regimen, after all it was outside at a dealer, at the port and elsewhere.
In NZ, the only covers immediately available are from European car dealers, though the price has gone down since I last checked (Maybe 6-8 months ago). Now they are running at 750NZD or 460USD. Getting one from overseas would run me a similar if not higher price including shipping, plus a wait time of over 1 month.
I guess I'm more wanting to know if it will be worth getting a cover for it, especially since I will be repainting, applying some decals, and a full
PPF
later in the year. It will be out over winter, and the weather here shouldn't get too bad (Snow, hail, etc) but if it should, I do have another garage at another house I could leave it at until the weather clears. I will occasionally drive it so will not store it there instead. The temperature shouldn't get below 5C (41F).
Wait, you're doing a complete paint job? That changes the calculus, just park it, care for it and move forward.
Yes, I plan on a complete paint job.
The
Pirelli
Porsche
Series requires decals on every side of the car, and I'd also like to get it prettied up for the series. Currently it's in grey/silver, which isn't my first choice, however there were
very
limited options when purchasing it. I always planed on changing the colour, and this series gives me the excuse I need to do so.
I've used
these guys
before. They will ship internationally, don't know how long that takes though. The last cover I got from them was the '5 layer softback' I think. It protects from UV, rain, and it allows things to breath/dry.
A agree Boris, do not use a tarp, it will just make things worse.
Again, it's a car, it will survive just fine outdoors for a lengthy period of time(years) with nothing preventative done. Thing you can do to help that is ensure there is a proper wax/sealant/coating/whatever on it, get a
cheesy reflective dash things
, don't let wet leaves sit on the paint, and park it on a hard surface. Try not to park it on grass or dirt for very lengthy periods of time.
Edit: You're getting it repainted afterwards? Ya, who cares. Just save the dash I guess.
