I figure the only way to get to it is to cut the box section open, replace the nut and then weld it shut again.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1999 996 Carrera 4 Cabrio. Hi everyone. My roof stopped closing properly. On closer inspection I noticed the central panel, where the courtesy lights are, was moving when the claw on the roof pulled tight. I took this panel off and saw that one of the captured nuts that holds it in place was cracked in two. I took off the trim panel that runs along the top of the windscreen to see if I could get to this nut to replace it, but it's inside a box section. I figure the only way to get to it is to cut the box section open, replace the nut and then weld it shut again. I would leave this to an expert to do, but I'm a bit worried about cutting the box sections it's obviously structural. Has anyone else had this problem? Or any ideas/advice? May thanks, Andy from London.

I had this issue on my cab and fixed it easily: Two options: 1) Recommended by Porsche: Remove the windshield to replace the prisoner bolt(s): $$$$$ 2) Or as I did : Remove the prisoner bolt through the hole, enlarge the hole with a drill to install a rivet-nut: You Tube It took me 30 minutes and costed a couple dollars.

That is very slick. I would love to see the process from the other side too so I can figure out how it works.

POST 6Original post

The PDF is very detailed but there is no need for a special tool as shown on the Youtube video.

POST 7Original post

Riv nuts work great. I used them during my corvette restoration. Practice first just so that that you feel comfortable before attacking the problem.
