I'm after new tyres. I current have PS2 N2 and love them, but I'm curious about the P4S. However, they're not made with an N-rating in 19inch size, because the contemporaneous model is the 718 in 20+ inch only.
It looks like I could locally find the PS4S in Aftermarket Generic form, or in MO1 Mercedes AMG form...
What's the best choice between the 3 options?
My gut is that the PS2 N2 is a known quantity and unlikely to be wrong, but the PS4S has about 10 years more development, so ought to be better even in the Aftermarket form. Furthermore is it too silly to assume / hope that Merc AMG would probably optimize the same things as Porsche would, and thus the MO1 is close enough to the N rating?
Many thanks, Jon
Can comment from track perspective. I switched from PS2 N2 to PS4S generic on my
cayman
987.2
(2.9) in 2022 and my top lap times improved significantly (46.47->46.09 at Vantaa Circuit (FI), 1:35.72->1:34.56 at Ahvenisto (FI)). Since then I only used PS4S on that car.
Exact tire specs, as ordered from the shop:
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S
235/35 ZR19 (91Y) XL
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S
265/35 ZR19 (98Y) XL
Not sure about MO rating, my tire supplier discouraged to use them instead of N-spec, but he tested SportCup2, not PS4S.
That's very helpful - thanks

Thinking about it, I speculate the Merc AMG MO1's might not be appropriate since most (all?) their cars are front-engined and generally heavier...
I think I'll head for PS4S in generic form in that case.
Now I have to figure out which size to get for 8.5J / 10J
(back to scouring

I'm not sure there ever was an N-spec PS4S in the 265/40-19 size; my
981
came equipped with N-spec PS4Ss on the front (235/40-19) and M01-spec PS4Ss (265/40-19) on the back. A tech I spoke with about this said that all
Caymans
with 19" wheels that were fitted with Michelins came with that setup. I imagine that if
Porsche
equipped cars this way, they thought the M01s were good enough.
Gotcha - thanks! I wish they'd publish this stuff, but then again, that's what this great forum is for
PS2 should be forgotten, its age old technology now (it was released in 2007). As for the PS4/PS4S... for street use you will not need N- rating at all (unless some sort of insurance or warranty requires it). Generally, N rated tyres have a bit firmer sidewalls - and sometimes a bit different compound - which make them turn more confidently on track BUT also more uncomfortable on streets.
