The 968 was a number cruncher, and a thrill, but too modified away from a streetable car- and the 5 speed seams to be able to use the torque curve better.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Seems like theres a lotta mechanical failure type threads going around at the moment. So to lighten things up a bit heres a post bath pic of mine all shiny & happy 😃

Just finished breaking this one in and dynoing it for a local dealer that installed an RND engine into it. No more doom and gloom for it, just resurrection!
Thanks for starting this thread.
I will be honest, since that crankshaft failure thread, I have stopped checking in on this 996 forum.
It was making me sick to think I waited until being in my mid 50s to buy a Porsche, then read everyday that it is a ticking time bomb.
$^&#/ it!
I love my car, I was just down to Lowe's picking up something today.
I snapped this picture on the way back walking to my car.
Great attitude!!!
I tell people that are fearful of buying high performance German sports cars like the BMW M3, MB AMG, or Porsches... don't let the fear of failures that circulate the internet forums stop you from buying a little fun in life. Every car has things that must be addressed... it's seems like the 996 is the curse of the RL 911 forums because of the IMS problem. But the fact is... there are options out there! Can you say LN engineering IMS solution? When you buy these cars, plan on spending at least $5,000 to get them to a state where you can drive them with a peace of mind. I personally think these are beautiful powerful cars that are meant to be driven hard! Just my thoughts on the subject!

I feel like I was forced into changing IMS due to propaganda, my original bearing was perfect, when pulled at 60k miles.
But what ever it is done.
I started doing oil analysis and everything looks okie dokie.
When I first became interested in the Porsche 996 and Boxster (because of the low purchase costs), I quickly learned it was partly due to the IMS problem. I thought it was internet propaganda too. How could Porsche be so wrong on a vital part like a shaft bearing? I went to Porsche and they unofficially admitted there was a problem with these bearings, but didn't really offer IMS replacement service at the time. They would only replace the motor if it experienced catastrophic failure. I later visited a independent shop that serviced German sports cars. While standing in the shop, I noticed piles of what appeared to be intermediate shafts with bearing wear on the end. I took a picture. (I'll try to upload it later.) I asked the owner about those shafts. He said they were just a small sample they kept from cars that died from IMS failure. He went on to explain they were both from Boxster 986 and 996 cars. I finally witness evidence right in front of my face!
Ok, so my point is you made the right choice by making the preventive move instead of the reactive move. Reactive is always more costly from my understanding of the problem. Don't ever think you were conned into making the swap. How many miles on the car since the retrofit? I know a lot of people change the RMS and IMS out with a clutch service. Just curious, if you keep the car for the long haul are you going to put another bearing in it?
IMS, RMS, AOS, LWFW, Sachs Stage II clutch set up, plugs, 997 coil packs and Tarret X51 oil baffle done @ 60k miles.
IPD Comp plenum and GT3 throttle body, Kline headers, 200 cell X pipe ,Tubi mufflers, Evoms Stage IV tune @ 55k miles.
It now has 72k, running great.
The second part of my IMS negatively, I was talked out of the IMS Solution by local PCA members, that I later have determined that their knowledge on IMS could fit in a thimble and still have a lot of room left.
As far as another bearing, I will monitor oil analysis and base my decisions on that and clutch wear. If it needs a clutch again, then a visual at least will be done.

"Their knowledge on IMS could fit in a thimble". That's so funny!
I think that's the second or third story I've read this week where people regret not paying a little more for the LN IMS solution. What are your thought on the EPS oil fed bearing? Personally, I don't like the idea of having cylindrical roller bearings. I like the more proven journal bearing design of the LN product.
Hey guys, lets try not to turn this into another IMS thread. Theres already 7000 of those in here. Lets keep the thread to admiring the awesome cars we have!

Thanks....the 951 is just such an awesome car, 285 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels and it's in close to mint shape. I've been building a new deck on my house and finishing the siding on the last two sides of it this year.....so I drove the 951 in spring turbo weather, but haven't used it in the past 90 days or so. I will probably take it out for the fall and put it back to sleep after a few runs.

I absolutely LOVE the late 944 platform. I had an 83, and then an 86 turbo, and then a 94 968 3L turbo.
the 951 has a special place in my heart (and set unbreakable young+dumb records in my history). The torque is absolutely addicting, that 5th gear roll on the freeway I still havent forgotten. The handling is forgiving and intuitive.
The 968 was a number cruncher, and a thrill, but too modified away from a streetable car- and the 5 speed seams to be able to use the torque curve better.
we also successfully lemons race an S2, and it made me appreciate the NA twin cams deliverable power on the track.
I LOVE my C4S, but if Someone offered me top dollar for her at this point In my life Id buy a child mover (08-10 Cayenne GTS) AND a nice S2.
I actually like the mechanical failure threads, ( better than the cupholder threads) if its mechanical, it will wear out or break at some point. It's always interesting to me to try and figure out the cause of the failure. Whether it be maintenance, design, stress, age, metallurgy, conditions, underlying cause, and whether it can be upgraded, redesigned, strengthened ect. Should be able to last 200-300k miles. Anyway i like pretty pictures too. Here is Sally with 170k and having fun on the Dragon.
P-Brothers, I have only experienced JOY with both my 996 - My Targa and C4S have been nothing short of perfection, truly, zero issues. I drive them both like I stole them daily/weekly (whenever my son doesn't take one or the other) regardless, I have yet to have any issues - fast forward to present day - Targa has 117K miles - C4S close to 82K miles and not even a bulb has gone out. I live in the Northeast, and drive both cars during Winter and they Still Shine. I have only own Porsche since my first car (1984-*944 Turbo - Upgraded to 911 platform and remain forever faithful, before I leave this earth, I would love a GT3 or 992 Turbo S
Thanks!
Yep, Seal Grey, Sport Exhaust...and a whole bunch of other rare options. Sport Seats, 030 suspension, X51, etc. A one of one car. Very lucky to find it.
Yup, gotta' keep em' clean! The last 1/4 mile to my place is a dirt road, so washing cars and motorcycles is a frequent pastime. A clean 996 is a happy 996. Plus, washing them goes well with beer and music, so it's a win all the way around.
Spiffed it up for today's show our local PCA Chapter holds at Spanish Landing every year.
I was only there as a spectator but you still want to look good.
