Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Checked wiring on amp no orange thick wires just looks like standard normal copper wiring.
Leading evidence: 'Check wiring' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check wiring' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've seen a lot of chatter about replacement head units on the 996. My question is how do I know whether I've got the Bose optical fibre version or just a standard one as replacing the head unit in the latter is much easier and cheaper. My 996 is a standard Carrera 3.6 tiptronic 2002.
If you have a CD22 or a PCM.1 you have copper if you have a CDR23 or a PCM2.1 you have MOST.
If you have an aftermarket head unit, anything 2001 or older will be copper and anything 2004 will be MOST.
I think 2002/2003 is the grey area where your car could potentially be either, in which case have a look at the amp, if you have a strange plug with two orange cables coming out out have MOST otherwise it's copper. The orange fibre cables wont feel like normal wire, more rigid and wont want to bend a tight radius.
If you are considering a PCCM+ which I thoroughly reccomend, it comes with all the kit you need for either so you could buy the head unit and have everything you need either way.
Thank you for this thread, it is really useful and perfect timing as I also have a 2002 and I'm going to install a 90's system in it. I used to compete in sound offs back in the day and I've been collecting equipment for my build for years. An Alpine 7525r (cassette), cd changer, Phoenix Gold M50 & M25 Amps, Phoenix Gold 215 Equaliser etc..
To add a further option, I think some 'copper' (non-fibre) cars have an amp and some don't. This may be unique to a 986 Boxster like mine, but I've struggled to find wiring instructions for my early '97 986 with amp.
