Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

As mentioned above, the immobilizer uses a different chip in the key, separate from the battery and its circuitry.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I changed my battery in my key and now the ignition switch will not recognize my key. Symptoms are: 1. When inserting key the steering wheel will not unlock. moved steering wheel to relieve tension but did not help. 2. Both front and rear trunk buttons work fine. 3. Door lock button works fine. 4. Key turns ignition switch and does not unlock steering wheel and no dash lights come on. 5. Starter will not engage when put into start position. 6. The only thing that the that comes up on the instrument information block is "KEY NUMBER 1" Any and all suggestions / advice is appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Don't you have another key? From memory when i changed my key shell many years ago due to broken buttons, I forgot to move the small chip over to the new shell. It looks like a small magnet but it's precence is sensed by the ignition switch. I think without that gizmo present the key will behave like you describe. Is it possible this thing fell out or got dislocated while you had the shell case open?

POST 3Original post

As mentioned above, the immobilizer uses a different chip in the key, separate from the battery and its circuitry. Check to ensure you still have the chip present. See: https://www.planet-9.com/threads/replacement-key-shell.87740/?post_id=780663#post-780663 Without that chip, the car will not start, etc, but everything else will work, since that stuff is driven off the battery and that circuit. You didn't say you replaced the key itself, but this is a commonly missed bit during that process. I wonder if you dropped or lost that chip during the battery replacement? It's usually glued in, but who knows...

POST 4Original post

Problem Solved by suggestion from ZuffenZeus and others. Many Thanks! I forgot to switch the magnet over to the new plastic key holder. Brain fade on my part!
