I've replaced boots on my 968 and 951 in the past, but the whole shaft comes out easily.

The second one didn't want to come out either (I needed to replace the outer boot) and thats when I found I could replace outer boot without removing the shaft from the hub/upright.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All, has anyone been able to replace both inner and outer CV Boots without removing the axel shaft from the vehicle? My boots are cracking and leaking grease, but not torn. No clicking while backing or cornering.
Pelican Parts
article on the subject suggests that you can replace both without removing the axel. Has anyone done this? The outer boot would need to slide the entire length of the shaft to come off. Is there enough access? Any tips or recommendations? I've replaced boots on my 968 and 951 in the past, but the whole shaft comes out easily. Thanks in advance!
Yes they can be, I've done it. you do need to remove the diagonal aluminum underbody brace (easy, 4x 15mm nuts and a bolt) to allow the axle enough "droop" space.
Cheers,
Julian
Thanks Julian, I'm encouraged! I plan to do this using my
QuickJacks
, which raises the car about 30" off the ground. Do you think this will give me enough working room? Love to see that you are also a DIY guy!
Pull the axels out and replace all the boots.
You only have one extra bolt to take the axel out and you are there.
The c/v boots are much easier to work on out of the car.
The boots cost less than $90.00 for everything.
I went with factory
Porsche
boots the lasted 19 years.
It's not a hard job, but very messy.
If you are going to do it do it right.
ps losen the axel nuts while the car is on the ground before taking the c/v joint bolts out.
Make sure the drive socket if fully inserted into the c/v joint bolts.
The axel shaft is a tight fit. lifting the rear wheel will give you the room to wiggle it out.

Actually it's very straight forward.
First remove the big nut, then put the car on stands to remove the wheels, then remove the bolts on the shaft flanges and separate tge flanges from the tranny, this would give you enough room to slide the shaft away from the hub.
The only way to replace the rubber boots without removing the drive shafts is to use aftermarket 'split type rubber boots' that I personally would never consider using..
I like to remove the wheels to have the extra space
PS: buy a good quality tool to loose the bolts of the flanges, and to reinstall them clean them first and use a bit of Locktite to keep them from walking away..lol
Neither of mine slid out. The first axle I did was stuck so solid I had to remove the upright and take the whole thing to a local shop to press out. I was having to replace the wheel bearing anyway but that axle did NOT want to come out. The second one didn't want to come out either (I needed to replace the outer boot) and thats when I found I could replace outer boot without removing the shaft from the hub/upright. Those axles had likely been in the car for 16 years at that stage and driven through who knows what conditions etc.
I removed the drives hats on my 987 a few times (clutch and tranny repair) and once on my
981
and never had an issue, perhaps because both of my cars lived in SoCal and we do not have rust issues, perhaps applying
PB Blaster
prior of removal..?
I did this job about 10 months ago. right inner axel boot was torn.
So, I decided to replace all 4 boots.
I have had shoulder surgery and don't have a lot of strength. I couldn't get the right axel to move with a hammer.
I didn't want to put any heat on the axel because I was afraid of it damaging the bearing. So, I used
pb blaster
to let it soak in. Hit it a few more times no movement.
While I was waiting, I went to the driver side axel. 3 hits with a hammer and it was out.
So I soaked the axel shaft and called it a night and waited until the morning.
Next
morning hit it again it wouldn't move.
Called my
Porsche
expert friend he told me. "Take an air chisel and spray
wd40
while you are using it the lube will go into the splines upon impact."
I don't own an air chisel, so I improvised.
I used a 1/2-inch rotary hammer with a pointed bit and
wd40
. within 30 seconds it was moving.
It took about 3 minutes going slowly to get it out completely.
I removed all the rust from the splines on the axel and bearing and reinstalled with Anti seize.
