Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Very hot day and the Cayman sat home in the garage. Went for a drive tonight and found this dastardly squiggle. I seem to remember that there is a kit to repair these. Have you guys done this with success? What did you use to fix the squiggle?

POST 2Original post

I've read on some previous posts where the same problem occurred and actually went away on its own. Go figure. If it were me, I'd wait a while before embarking on replacement, just to see what happens after a few weeks.

POST 3Original post

Believe it or not, i've seen people use one of these to fix this issues. Give the affected area a little zap. Piezo spark ignitor butane torch repair | eBay These piezo igniters are perfect for repairing the Sistotec butane gas soldering torch. Contact me to find out how easy they are to install, and save yourself the cost of buying a new torch. Youtube video coming soon on how to replace them. www.ebay.co.uk

POST 4Original post

Just found the link as I was curious: WARNING : You only learn at the end of the video that the guy gets shocks when he uses it, so I'm guessing it's safe IF you insulate it. Worth a try, and I bet you can get a piezo spark ignitor from a hardware store (see replacement grill parts).

POST 5Original post

I suspect if you insulated it - the trick might not work. The guy gets the shock because he completed the circuit between the ignitor and the LCD device. And that might be what works to fix it. Someone should test that out - wear a rubber glove on the hand holding the device being zapped.. BTW - anyone know what "46" tattooed on this wrist stands for?

POST 6Original post

Several days later and the squiggle has grown. After researching the process of completely disassembling the instrument cluster, which is necessary to replace the LCD screens, I have decided that I like my squiggle and plan to keep it.

POST 7Original post

Looks like an excuse to buy yourself a nice watch, LOL. That's what I'd do.

POST 8Original post

Excellent decision IMHO. Just say to yourself "patina" "character" "soulless new cars.." As @Budman suggested, just buy a Rolex - probably be cheaper than getting a dealer to fix it.

POST 9Original post

I replaced the LCD nav screen in my PCM2.1 that is in my Boxster with a new one from AliExpress and yes, it took a couple of hours to remove, carefully disassemble, put in the new screen and reassemble but TOTALLY worth the time and effort (to me). I say give it a shot

POST 10Original post

I had that happen to my first Boxster ! It lasted for a couple of driving seasons and it disappeared on its own!

POST 11Original post

Update: My squiggle has grown even more. At this rate by next summer my entire Porsche will be nothing but squiggle and I love it!

POST 12Original post

Update: After all this time my squiggle has almost complete repaired itself.

POST 13Original post

I wonder if that is like stuck pixels on LED/LCD TVs. Sometimes they can be 'unstuck' by being turned on/off many times. There are even computer programs that will exercise all the pixels rapidly to clear them.

POST 14Original post

These are somewhat different than LED displays. A liquid-crystal display uses a backlight shining though a liquid matrix (grid contacts) where an electrical charge can change the polarization of the crystal. Combined with a polarizing screen between the display and the viewer light transmission from the backlight can be turned off and on. Back in the early days of LCD displays, rubbing a thumbnail over a screen would cause enough rotation that light would come through. My WAG on this phenomenon is probably a stray electrical discharge through the liquid crystal makes the worm appear. With time that charge dissipates and the worm disappears. I've seen half a dozen reports of it and it appears with patience it just goes away. Some people aren't patient and buy replacement LCD display elements and disassemble and reassemble the cluster to install the new display. Would rapidly switching the display on and off help? Dunno anyone who has tried this. Who wants to be first?
