Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, With all this lockdown business, needless to say the car's off the road (I'm working from home), so I looking at some additional "preventative" maintenance - the first thing is the diff oil on my MY00 C4. So, (and I'm fully prepared that this might be a stupid albeit simple question!) - I know I need 2 litres of 75w-90 oil for the front diff, but it seems that while I'm doing it, I might as well do the others - which is the crux of my question:- How many diffs are there (front & rear, but is there a centre?) Therefore how much oil do I need? Cheers Dano

POST 2Original post

There is no such thing as a Stupid question .. there is merely a search for Knowledge that you don't yet possess ... There is a front diff and then the gearbox .. this has the diff as part of it and uses the same oil , it's not a seperate oil . Gearbox oil amount is about 3 ltrs ( 2,7 According to the manual with front diff at 1.5 ) 5 ltrs will just about be enough . http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=102887&sid=2953ed7b40888b4c94750f24fada3350

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers buddy Will get a few new washers too. Still got plenty of time to do it as it's now Narnia outside! Depends how long lockdown goes on for 😂 Dan

POST 4Original post

Is it manual or auto? Auto only has gear oil in the differential part of the gearbox. Top tip - remove the filler plug first! They have been known to seize which is a bummer if you've dropped the oil! Mine needed a breaker bar to crack it undone! Demort - which oil do you recommend - norm for cars in general is GL4 for gearboxes and GL5 for differentials, however, 996 gearbox and diff is one unit? Ian

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeh I've heard that the top plug *can* be a bit of a d1ck. And yes, top plug first 😀 Mine's a manual

POST 6Original post

I was glad someone pointed this out to me before I dropped my gearbox oil. That fill bolt ended up needing a bottle jack on lumps of wood, to turn a ratchet against the weight of the car to crack it. Even "old b*stard", the 4ft length of steel gas pipe couldn't get a good enough purchase on it on the driveway on axle stands.

POST 7Original post

I tend to avoid this type of question im afraid .. i just use the Porsche recommended oil at work and i havent tested any oils unlike you guys so i'm not qualified here . Manual gearbox and there is only one oil as diff and box are one unit and share the oil . I didn't understand the problem with the fill bolt not coming out as i've never had an issue .. A ramp and a breaker bar work just fine .. I then read YPVS comment and it made sense .. i really don't envy you guys doing things like this on stands and on your back .. My Hat off to you all !

POST 8Original post

Demort, What you use at work would be nice to know. I know what you mean about oil recommendations - there must be literally millions of posts on the internet recommending / debating the topic of the 'best' oil! Cheers Ian

POST 9Original post

I can say most of what we use is either mobile 1 or direct from Porsche and that oil is pretty much a blank tub with no descriptions on it . oil is a parts job and to be honest .. i use what i'm given
