Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I run a 99 on track (only muffler delete & air cleaner upgrade) and have had many chances to drag with 2nd gen 996...
Leading evidence: 'Run 99' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 99' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I like to hear if anyone has ever did a friendly drag or track between the 2 mentioned : )? I know it maybe unfair comparo since you can mod a car to the max but thought if anyone had an opportunity to go up against a '02 model? Regards. Mike
I have not. But in a hypothetical drag on a track - I think it would be pretty close to dead even. While the '02 has a bit more horsepower and a more efficient torque curve - it is a heavier car. Close enough anyway that the better driver would prevail.
I cannot speak for a coupes. I have a stock 02 coupe and raced my friend in his Cab with fabspeed exhaust and airbox and I just pull away from him. Obviously the Cab ways more so its really not a totally fair comparison. I can say that I also owned a 99 C2 Coupe with B&B exhaust and K&N airfilter and my 02 Coupe is much faster.
It would take a lot of mods to make the 99-01 car faster in a straight line. Remember it's not about peak HP, it's about area under the curve. The later car isn't that much heavier and in a straight line the hp/weight ratio doesn't seem to matter quite as much as most people assume it will.
My car crushes a 99-01 in a straight line on the track. Of course mine is modded also...
Yeah haha sorry about that....I was searching for another thread I saw the other day, left the computer, and saw this and didn't realize it was so old.
A lot of people seem to be in that dilemma now, which is why the question seemed more timely to me than it was.
We've dyno'd several stock 3.4's and 3.6's and the consensus has been that the 3.6 puts out 25 more whp on average. I have no idea how that manifests in a drag race, but on the track weight is more relevant....
I rolled on throttle next to a friend of mine coming back from a DE event. We're both instructors, but I had a passenger and a bit more gear in my car. Rolling on throttle from the bottom of first through the top of second gear we were just about even. I have a 2002, and he was in a 99 car. My car feels a fair amount torquier, particularly mid range.
Todays 3.4 mods are different.... with a headers, intake, hiflo mufflers and a chip. It can be faster than a stock a 3.6..... with the right tuner is the key.
I run a 99 on track (only muffler delete & air cleaner upgrade) and have had many chances to drag with 2nd gen 996... they might hold 25 more hp... but , I can still out drag them.
It really comes down to driver on the between these cars. Getting the Rpm's up, shift points... etc...
It's difficult to tell on the track because corner exit speed is so crucial. As a general rule of thumb each extra MPH going onto a straight seems to be worth about 10 hp at the end of the straight. If you can come out of a turn 2 mph faster than someone else, that's approx equal to 20 hp. Remember that extra 2 mph is 2 mph for the entire length of the straight.
And you're totally right about shift points -- most people doing DE in 996's (well any car really!) shift way too early. If you look at a dyno curve, the power curve is flat at the rev limiter -- in other words you have to shift just before the rev limiter for max acceleration. I couldn't do that consistently until I got an AIM dash with shift lights. Before I had programmed the shift lights correctly, I saw in the data that I'd constantly shift 500-800 RPM too early.
I have found that even in CR many people shift way early...
For me, I did not need to set up my shift lights.. After years of racing motorcylces and working with my father while he drag raced... I can pick it up from the sound of the car (even with tons of outside traffic noise).
I thought so too until I looked at the data. You'd (you in general not you specifically) be surprised at all of the things you do and don't realize and the data doesn't lie!
