I agreed to buy the car on 22 December and did a deal to include having the clutch, DMF, slave cylinder replaced along with the RMS and IMS for piece of mind.

A quick call back to the garage and they'd arranged for me to take it in the following day and they replaced the broken radiator for me.

They were very good about replacing the leaky radiator too.

Fingers crossed that fixes the issue as I'm keen to actually use the car!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
I've just joined the forum having bought my first 911. It's the Arena Red 3.4 which was discussed in the following thread:
http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=143305&sid=d38cc08ce569074b211d450389ac4862
The car is in excellent condition but on inspection it needed a clutch. I agreed to buy the car on 22 December and did a deal to include having the clutch, DMF, slave cylinder replaced along with the RMS and IMS for piece of mind.
The garage were excellent and just kept hold of the car for me over the Christmas period so that they could start the work in the New Year. I had the call to tell me the car was ready on 8 January and I swiftly went to collect! Unfortunately on arriving home after a 15 mile journey I found the radiator was leaking. A quick call back to the garage and they'd arranged for me to take it in the following day and they replaced the broken radiator for me.
Unfortunately the car still has a couple of issues. Once I got the car home yesterday after the same 15 mile journey, I parked it on the drive so that I could open the garage. I then went back to turn it on and the car was dead. I charged it over night and it was still dead this morning so I swiftly ordered a S5 010 Bosch S5 from Tayna. Fingers crossed that fixes the issue as I'm keen to actually use the car!
The other issue I'm having is regarding the passenger door. The car has clearly had little use only covering a couple of thousand miles a year. When it's cold weather the door just won't open from either the inside or outside. The window drops at the pull of the handle but there's no click or resistance from the door mechanism. The issue seems to go away once the car is warm but it's a bit frustrating to have to warm the car up before my wife is able to get in! I've had a search and can't find any threads which deal with a problem opening the door only when cold. The garage suggested it just needed some use and they lubricated the mechanism but it's still not opening this morning. Can anyone suggest what might be the issue?
Thanks very much and I look forward to getting to know any member local to Southampton (once we're out of lockdown, of course).
Rich
Welcome to the fold! Lovely car, I really like the colour.
WRT the battery, does the voltmeter show 14V when the car is cold to indicate the car is indeed charging the battery?
Can't help with the door unfortunately, I would be tempted to take off the door card which is a pretty simple operation as long as you remember to remove the fixing inside the door bin and have a poke at it. Does it unlock on the remote when warm?
If the door is locked it will require two pulls of the inner lever to open - the first to unlock, the second to open. Obviously in this case the outside handle won't work until it's unlocked.
Welcome and crikey sounds like you've had a right old time of it. I would get them to replace the door mech. Sounds like they have not been through the car very well prior to sale.
Result!!
:welcome:
It's not a big job taking the door card off and having a snoop round the mechanism. Give everything a good blast with the wife's hairdryer and check if the rubber seals are still under the door handle as they may be letting moisture in, like so:
The left hand one missing:

Thanks for the replies!
I'd love to respond with multiple quotes but I have no idea how to do it. It's been a while since I've been active on a forum.
Shalmaneser - The battery does show 14V when the car is running. I'd put it my NOCO genius "smart" charger over night and it was still dead this morning so I can only assume it's a dead battery. Luckily I have a few other cars I can use to jump start it as my booster pack wasn't strong enough to do the job.
The door unlocks and locks fine and operates normally when the car is warm. It's just the last couple of mornings it engages the switch to drop the window but the second click when you feel it pulling the mechanism to open the door doesn't engage. I gave it a few tugs this afternoon and it came open after a few tries and a light punch to the handle. After it has opened once it opens reliably thereafter until the next day. I'm hoping it just fixes itself once the new battery is in there.
To be fair to Brookspeed, it is an issue which I can never replicate when I'm there so they've not witnessed it failing to open so not something they'd necessarily notice on an inspection. They were very good about replacing the leaky radiator too.
Alex - thanks for the response. It might be me, but I'm unable to see the photos you posted at the bottom of your post. After owning a few MGs and a 205 GTI I'm happy to take apart the door and take a look and have experience dealing with similar jobs. When you did yours did you have to remove the plastic membrane which seals the door? The cost of a new one looks to be around £80 and I've never managed to get a removed seal to be water tight a second time around. I'm keen to keep it in place if I can!
Good to see a fellow (ex) 205 gti driver!
The membrane is a thin foam moulded piece in the 996 which is pretty easy to remove if you just take your time.
I've still got my 1.6 but sold my 1.9 a couple of years ago. The 996 has taken the 1.9's place in the garage
Thanks, that's good to know. I will wait until I've got the new battery and given the car a good drive before fiddling with the door. Fingers crossed for an easy fix but no doubt I'll find a few more issues once I've had a chance to actually drive the thing!
Photo bucket is a funny host - they don't like hyperlinking unless you give them £lots a month which caused a lot of old threads to die a few years ago. I prefer imgur which is a lot more liberal in that respect.
I just checked on my phone and I can see them so it's the laptop.
It's a shame photobucket went that way. I just did a search of some of my old threads on other forums and all of my photos now have the massive watermark in the way!
