Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Posted this on another forum hoping someone can help. Today I had an issue with my PDK where I couldn't remove the key as the instrument cluster told me to put car in Park. I moved the shifter forward even though it appeared to be in Park and was ok until I tried to exit Park again. There was no movement in the button and lever was stuck. I pushed the lever forward to the dash and the button popped up and with more than normal pressure I can depress the button and move the lever to drive. The rest of the drive was the same, any ideas on what could be happening, the button doesn't reset unless I push the lever past the normal resting position. Sometimes I can move from Park to Reverse or Drive without getting the button to reset. Not sure what controls the button "pop" it what could be interfering, anyone have an idea? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Whenever key won't come out of the ignition is typed my mind goes to ignition switch as this is known behavior. I don't know if there is any electromechanical linkage of the ignition switch and PDK position but there could be, it makes some sense anyway. As for the PDK ? The first places I'd check are the linkages and the mechanical mechanism within the shifter itself. Someone might know far more than me just adding my thoughts here, good luck.

POST 3Original post

Appreciate the response Boris. It is hard to tell if the button on the knob not resetting to the up position in Park is a problem with the shifter/knob or something more severe. Going to pull the knob and see if something becomes more apparent.

POST 5Original post

Boris, I panicked when I encountered the key issue and might be confusing myself and feel dumb asking this question. When you move the gear selector to park, do you have to push the button on the gear selector to move it out of park? I removed the knob and when it goes into reverse there is a white rod in the stem, effectively the button, that moves into an up position. This needs to be depressed in order to exit reverse and the same is true about drive but when I move it to park the white rod never moves into the up position. Does this sound normal?

I've never removed mine. My PDK is from 2011. There are no buttons on it, unless the slide is what you're calling the button. With mine you push down on the center metal slide at the most forward portion of it, there's even a scallop in the metal to direct you. That entire slide will rocker down and then you select the gear you wish to engage.
