Is a tester a bit of Porsche kit that plugs in like a diagnostic, or is there a test mode on the stereo menu somewhere?

Hi all, I have a query about the PCM 1 in my C4S that I hope you can help with.
The buttons on the head unit don't light up when the headlights are on, making it rather tricky to use at night.
The buttons all work, they just don't illuminate.
The screen is fine, although it doesn't switch from day to night mode even though it's set to auto.
Anyone experienced this or have any ideas on a fix or something to check?
Just thought I would ask before stripping it out of the dash to look at the plugs and wiring.

My guess would either be an internal fault with the unit or a coding issue ..
Tester on , check coding then do a vehicle handover ( control unit reset ).
Again for no night/day there is a light sensor .. should be a fault code if so but handover might work.
I would certainly start with a tester first as pulling the unit won't help a lot ... plugs don't really cause this sort of issue .

A tester is the laptop we connect to a car .. it will communicate with certain control units on the car and give us some information .. fault codes are what the car sees as being a fault with a certain system on the car .
A vehicle handover is also done with a laptop .. its basically like turning off a home computer after its locked up and turning it on again .. a reset but its done via the laptop and not a power switch .
These are things that normally a Porsche garage does unless the owner has a laptop that will talk to the car .
Don't apologize for being new .. we all were once .. people here try to help though .

Guess I'll have to wait until this lockdown eases and then find somewhere with the right equipment to check this out.
At least its nothing urgent, just a mild annoyance
