I have good prior owner service records and have several items that should have been done based on number of years but not there yet in terms of mileage.
So I am looking for advice on what should be a priority, what should be done based on age as none of this has hit their suggested mileage yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
2008 with now 26,500 miles on it.
Spark Plugs
- he had them done 6,000 miles ago but that was 8 years ago. Manual says 4 yrs or 40K miles.
Replace Drive Belt - never done, Manual says 6 years or 60K miles.
Clean Throttle body - never done, Manual says 6 years or 60K miles.
Replace Manual Transmission Fluid - never done, Manual says 12 years or 120,000 miles.
Brak Fluid - done 8 years ago but that was only 7,000 miles ago. Manual says every 2 years or 20 miles.
Below would be my order of priority
Plugs because they can seize due to time
Brake fluid absorbs moisture and can damage the brake system due to time
Belt will get brittle and crack over time. This won’t cause additional damage like the above but could leave you stranded
Gearbox fluid and throttle body when you are looking for something to do
Mine had similar records as the previous owner drove around 10000 miles last 10 years. As for me:
1. water pump / thermostat /
spark plugs
- the PO replaced these 12 years / 20000 miles ago but no plan to replace yet
2. drive belt - no record but visually checked recently and looks like it was replaced recently (certainly not original as the condition was good)
3. didn't realize the manual actually says "clean throttle body" - my buddy had a bad experience replacing it on his
986
so I am going to wait
4. tranny fluid - no record so replaced it last year; however, the old fluid "looked good" - still transparent (make sure you check the drain / fill
plug
type) so you can certainly wait
5. brake fluid - as Nathan said, this is time-based so replace - I need to replace mine (just bought 2 liters of pentosin). You only need 1 but just in case.
Thank you, very helpful. Much appreciated.
You can also check brake fluid to see how much water content it has in it. There is an electronic tool that they use to measure it. My local mechanic checked mine at 7 years old and reported that it was perfect with no moisture in it at all. It will vary according to storage conditions and whether you are doing longer high speed trips or short around town stuff.
Thanks, did not know this. Just bought an electronic tester (<$10), found some discussion threads on it.
Much appreciated.
