Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yes,it costs more to maintain and repair but it is after all the finest sports car ever made and seats in the back as well!

i do 15-18K miles a year; 95% motorway, have been using my bmw328sport for past 3 years which makes about 28-29mpg and costs about £5-600/year keeping it on the road and properly serviced.

3.) I spend about £1,500 a year on service, brakes and tyres and average about 24 mpg (using the performance and heel-and-toe every down-change, which uses fuel, but saves the clutch).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With the prices of a '98/'99 996 c4 coupe heading significantly sub 15k i'm thinking of it as a possible daily driver and stable mate to the 993cab.

any thoughts on
1. possible warped/cracked cylinders issues
2. things which often need doing around 80-100k miles?
3. running costs mpg etc.
4. what kind of mileages are possible from 996's? (the bm is at 220K and still strong as an ox!)
any comments appreciated...
I've been doing 18k per year in my 996 for 4 years now (108,000 miles and counting) as my daily driver.
1.) The engine failure issue is a bit of an unknown as there are still relatively few examples of 996s having covered stellar mileages (although I believe there are many in Germany). The problems seem to be related to them being ragged from cold, so finding one with a mechanically sympathetic previous owner would reduce the risk. I always warm mine up properly and I have zero oil and water consumption still at 108k, so I am hoping it will keep going for a fair bit longer!
2.) There is the 96k service of course, but other than that I'm not aware of anything recommended particularly: It passed its MoT only needing a sidelight bulb this week and it's on original suspension, steering, etc.
3.) I spend about £1,500 a year on service, brakes and tyres and average about 24 mpg (using the performance and heel-and-toe every down-change, which uses fuel, but saves the clutch). I've had one clutch (at 52k, so may be due another soon?)
4.) How long is a piece of string? I know of 996s over 300,000 kms on their original engine, but I also know of people needing a new engine at 15k.
If you don't want to get caught out with a big bill at the wrong time, best bet is to get it on the Hartech or RSJ plan and then just enjoy it!
Even though I bought from an OPC at the wrong time, I've always just treated it as any other daily driver and the only parking damage I have ever had was outside my own house!
Go for it... :thumb:
Same as Wattie really, 15K miles a year, 76K on the clock and the car lives outside.
25mpg...25.5mpg if I drive carefully, mostly motorway stuff.
It's what they were made for :thumb:

I did 20k in a year in my 4S. It relished it.
It did 27-28 to the gallon, was comfortable and reliable, and I used to look forward to the commute!
Running costs were not bad at all, nothing really went wrong with it. Ironically, the Lexus I bought to use as a daily driver has been much more troublesome, albeit under warranty...
Not much to add to Wattie's comments, except to add another "go for it!"
Got mine with a view to using as weekend car but circumstances changed and now it has become a daily driver.
It works well and is the most enjoyable driving pleasure I have had.
Cost and future costs depend on what you start with.
Buy the right one treat it well and you will smile every day for as long as you own it.
Yes,it costs more to maintain and repair but it is after all the finest sports car ever made and seats in the back as well!
Nothing comes near!

Only had mine a month (99 C2) & have put 2K miles on it, from 200 mile round trips.
Been very comfy & surprisingly quiet. Managed 30mpg at 85 mph, but with driving more suited to style of car usually get around 25 avg.
I'm with Wattie, TBrown and Robert B, mileage knocking on 80K miles now put c20K miles on in 18 months, daily driver, parked outside its never missed a beat!

The concept of a Porsche as a daily driver has historically been supported by reliability and durability.
As long as this remains a tenet of the Porsche experience, then they are great daily drivers.
However if stories of cataclismic failures on say 997 Gen 1 Engines are substantiated to a defineable issue(s) on which Porsche have not effectively responded, this will unpick the fabric of that belief. If that happens it's a long road back.
