Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone I sold my 993 a couple of years ago. I found a 2003 996 speed yellow with the options(Full leather, Heated Sport seats and rear window wiper) I wanted for 30K it has 52k miles and is Porsche certified. I have couple of questions. 1) Is 30K a fair price for 52k miles? 2) Has anyone else switched from a 993 and were the happy? 3) Anything I should look for? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Sounds like a fair price to me. I'd have a PPI done by a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic. Good Luck!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a ppi already scheduled.

POST 5Original post

$30K is a decent price for a MkII with low miles if you want a yellow one. If you don't want yellow, then it's too much. Speed yellow is funny that way. Tough to find a buyer, but when you do find one he will be very happy. Me personally, I like the speed yellow, but my wife doesn't. Guess why I bought a silver car. As far as the 993 goes...I don't expect you will be disappointed from a performance perspective. I drove a 993 when I was looking to buy my second 996, just to see what the fuss was about, and I was pretty underwhelmed. I do hang out with a big group of 993 guys though, and they are pretty smug about how pretty and how air cooled their cars are. I will give them those two points . The 993 is pretty, and it is air cooled. For all of the other reasons you could have to drive a Porsche I chose the 996 and not just because it was well priced.

POST 6Original post

Some people get it, some people don't. There's got to be some reason that most people who have owned 993s keep a special regard for them, even as they move on to newer, faster cars. But yes, it is possible for someone who appreciates the various dimensions of the 993 that were engineered out of the 996 (for better and worse) to enjoy a 996 as well. I'm liking mine a lot, even as the memory of what was lost between 1995 and 2002 is still fairly fresh.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I love the speed Yellow. My 993 was speed yellow. It is good to here that you can make the transition and be happy. It seem like alot of car for the money. I will be using the 996 as a daily driver. I am also thinking of going with the X74 Sport Suspension

POST 8Original post

2 Different cars so it depends what you are looking for in a car; DD, Track, Garage Queen, etc. The amount of car you get for the money on a 996 surpasses a 993. However the driving experience in a 993 is pretty great IMO. I jumped because it was a better platform as a race car: Faster, Possibly Cheaper to maintain, etc. If I were to have one or the other as light track duty and as an enthusist car I'd pick the 993. It just has that thing you can be smug about..

POST 9Original post

...I miss my 993 - with it's cramped interior and archaic dash. I did not like the engine inaccessibility that made a lot of diy work a royal pita though.

POST 10Original post

I have had two 993s, sold the last one about a year ago and bought a 996 cabrio. I miss the 993s, but I miss every Porsche I've ever had. Following an acclimation period of 2-3 months, I came to appreciate that the 996 is as good as/or better than the 993 in nearly every respect...except one: instrumentation. The vintage VDO gauges should have been retained...IMHO. relinuca

POST 11Original post

Relinuca, do you have an MK2 996 (2002+) car? I haven't owned a 993, but several older and newer Porsches. The 993 is indeed charming, but I think you'll be happy with the 996, they're great cars.

That'll take nother $10k. To the OP, you are paying what would constitute near "top dollar" for the 996 you are looking at. I use excellence magazines most recent values for the 996 to make that statement. Others may disagree with Excellence mags methodology for determine market value. 52K is a little high for that price and like others have said, speed yellow is only for some folks. If you don't plan to hold onto the car then speed yellow might be a bad choice. What does increase the value is the CPO. It's the best warranty you can get (albeit for only 2 years) for the 996. No deductible, no inclusion/exclusion crap, it's very clear what is covered. If you really like speed yellow (i do as well) and you plan to keep the car then $30k is a solid price. I hope it works out!

POST 14Original post

I had a '96 993. Bought it as a somewhat emotional buy, knowing that the 911's were going water cooled. As an arena red coupe, I loved the looks of it, but the driver's ergonomics seemed to be an afterthought--at best. (I respect that others disagree.) I enjoy my '03 Cab much more. No regrets. It doesn't have the rawness or edge of the earlier cars (but neither did the 993). So, accepting that newer cars are just different (in part because of govt demands for greater safety...and the process of refinement takes some of the character out of cars) -- I think the 996 is one of the sleeper values in performance and overall quality. That said, I intentionally purchased a MkII series, figuring they had worked out most of the teething problems that any company would face with (what amounts to) an all new model. After 4 years, still no problems with mine at all. I did replace the IMS/RMS/& clutch in a single visit to an indy...mostly for my own piece of mind. But that visit was reasonably priced for what I got. Not only no complaints, but after years of driving it, it still puts a smile on my face every time I take it out. I have been conservative with modifications, only adding an in-dash garage door opener (uses one of the blank toggle switches), an Escort SRX (detector/laser shifter), a PSE (paid for the manual control for the dash), and a set of winter wheels & tires from Ed. But...to each his own.
