As for upgrades, I personally wouldn't change anything on the engine, except consider a different type of filter, or if you've got a lot of cash, go for the X51 upgrade (might be X50, I can never remember which is NA versus TT)....but it would probably be cheaper to upgrade your car to a Turbo, rather than the X51 work.

OK i can tell you now actually, he said a BHP Test will be 130 quid but he wont be able to fix any issues - if any are indentified.

I am no fan of tip-tronics, I love to drive the car using manual shift but I am told the 996TT is so fast up and down the box that manuals are a no-go.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what is actually the best way to get a BHP increase on a 996?
I have a 996 C4 Cab and fancy a little extra BHP :thumb: - i have had it for 4 years, drive it everyday and dont plan to swap it for a while.
All suggestions welcome please chaps. Filters, chips etc??? Or is it all crap and nothing really works apart from trading up to the Turbo :dont know:
Thanks,
Dan.
I personally wouldn't want to put the engine under any more stress, I think 300bhp is a nice balance.
My advice would be get it rolling road'ed, check that it is running as near to 300 as possible. I saw a 98 3.4 on the rollers the other week only achieve 219bhp, the owner was gob-smacked as he thought the car was performing fine. One hour later the techy had reset the ECU and altered a few settings, he asked the guy to go and try it, he came back with a non-removable smile going from ear to ear saying what the F.. have you done, I am wheel spinning everywhere, the car is transformed. Unfortunately I didn't have time to hang around to see what the end figures were but i'd guess a big jump going by the owners face.
I know it's completely different, but it was very interesting watching the Top Gear do a Max Power on the Renault and the biggest HP increase was achieved by simply giving it a service, eg. filters and oil.
I agree with Lloyd, that I would see what it's putting out at the moment.

that top gear epiosde was all good fun but they avoided certain areas of the car when tuning....
Sports Exhaust and Air Filter will help the power and improve the noise, so will also feel much faster as a result of the improved vocals and with an ECU remap this will provide a solid gain
certainly a great way to get more from the car
with all 3 of the above done on my car, I can certainly feel the differnce
Darned right it would be cheaper to buy s Turbo.
The retrofit "X51" power kit for the 3.4 from Porsche consists of (amongst other things):
Camshafts
Heads
Inlet and exhaust manifolds
Oil Pump
Remap
Yours for £6300+VAT+fitting.....over 26 hours at £££/hour.
Result: 25 BHP
That's why I don't think you will get the sort of claimed increases with an air filter and sports exhaust. Note that Porsche don't include an air filter or exhaust on their kit, despite having parts in their range which would be easy for them to specify. The factory fitted kit also has different pistons.
Factory (3.4) X51 powerkit:
Modified intake system (cast alloy)
Revised cylinder heads
Optimized inlet and exhaust ducts (machined and polished)
Adapted exhaust manifolds (with uprated gasket)
Modified valves (including profile and longer shaft)
Larger lift camshaft
Additional dual chamber oil extraction pump
Additional oil extraction pipe (to service cylinders 4-6)
Modified oil pan (large alloy baffles)
Additional third radiator
Alternate Tri-metallic catalytic converter
New 996 mark 1.1 piston set
Modified fuel maps for DME
+ various alterations to ancillary pipework for space reasons.
A run of X51 equipped C2s (with cages and aero kits etc etc) were sold in Japan as a distinct model called the "996 Carrera Cup".
They were a standby model in case the GT3 was not type approved.
The X51 was only given an additional 20/25 BHP for "political" reasons - the much more expensive GT3 996.1 only developed 360 BHP.
A few mods will allow an X51 to reach or exceed 350 BHP.
Of course it still wont be as reliable (or as desirable etc etc) as a proper GT3 engine.
But then they never made a 4WD GT3 (GT4?) either
Cheers for the replys guys.
Christ im booking it in to get it Rolled etc ASAP - thats insane, 218 from 300!!! Mine drives beautifully i think (although now you have said that how would i know really having not driven another) so it will be interesting to see.
I used to have a 993 C4 Cab and same thing really (not sure what you all think) but i always LOVED it, as i do my 996 C4 Cab, and adore driving it, being in it, owning it and everything that comes with it (almost) BUT.............. and there is a but...
I always thought and still do that i could defintley go quicker..! and believe me i dont smash it, well only occasionally, but i do drive it EVERYDAY and often think what would a Turbo be like???
However - id have to get a Cab, as thats the fun for me personally, and the TT Cabs are still £££...
I will let you know what they say.
OK i can tell you now actually, he said a BHP Test will be 130 quid but he wont be able to fix any issues - if any are indentified. Did you say your mate had his ECU Re- Set???
Cheers,
Dan.
Well heres some advice...
I am no fan of tip-tronics, I love to drive the car using manual shift but I am told the 996TT is so fast up and down the box that manuals are a no-go. So if you are going to make the move ensure you try both to see what suits.
my 993 was a manual, loved it but prefer the Tip in all honesty, just like the buttons on the wheel, very cool and the change is sooooo smooth. Plus the 993 clutch was a killer in London.
Thing with a Turbo is where you really ever use it?? Sod that, id love one!!!
All quotes for a remap are coming in at 2500 aus dollars, so 1250 pounds, for a claimed BHP inc of about 20.
Im thinking about it.....
Cheers
Dan.
That is steep, I was thinking on the lines of £350 - £500 max
