Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but dad's 996 (2003 car) has just decided to not let him take the key out!. The car seems well charged and gets regular use. I read on another site that there is a pin hole that you can stick a paperclip in but not sure about doing this as it could damage the switch. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks Chris

POST 2Original post

It is most likely the ignition switch that has broken, not allowing the barrel to turn back completely and release the key. It is a very common problem, and there is a DIY in the Technical Articles section.

POST 3Original post

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a auto box, in park & handbrake on. Car is off to the garage today as we suspect the ignition barrel as previously suggested

POST 5Original post

Where are you taking it? If it is to a Porsche Centre, they will replace the whole lock barrel, whereas an indy would replace just the switch.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your help, we took it to Northway, they did a great job and sub £100. Great guys and go there to have it serviced All ready now for the classic le-mans
