Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

OMG I'm too old to have ever before used the term 'tight' but I can get the car thumping with bass, not vibrating, with the mids totally brilliantly clear and the tweeters bright as I want with a little tuning.

Suggestion

I figured since I've had the car 9 years so far and haven't missed having great audio, maybe just replace the amp.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

So my ASK amp blew out (Sound Plus) and rather than just fixing it, which would have cost ~$200, I thought I would just buy a new amp and have it installed. I figured since I've had the car 9 years so far and haven't missed having great audio, maybe just replace the amp. But, since the CD part of the CDR-24 became flakey, I missed being able to do any long range road trips. I decided I really wanted a new head unit as well that would have Bluetooth and XM. The shop I went to suggested the JVC KW-V840BT. It had everything I wanted plus Apple Carplay, which I didn't know anything about. Head unit and $300 amp later (Hertz HMP 4D) the sound was much better but just not right which was extremely troublesome. Shop owner pointed out that one of the woofers that the amp drove was blown. Hmm... He suggested some fairly dear speakers from a company called Audison. The price was much higher than I expected but I thought 'what the heck' give it a try. OMG I'm too old to have ever before used the term 'tight' but I can get the car thumping with bass, not vibrating, with the mids totally brilliantly clear and the tweeters bright as I want with a little tuning. My first thought was tight . Money well spent. Second thing I thought as I drove away was "did they put mufflers on this car?" I can't hear the motor.:hilarious: Anyway, when I got home I thought I would ohm out the old speakers to weed out the bad one. Ohmed out the coils and both were good!?! Re-ohmed them out from the connector and one was open- further investigation revealed that there was a cold solder joint from the factory (ASK in Italy.) Was able to pull the wire between the connector and the coil completely out and the wire was oxidized. Only thing holding it there was a bit of melted insulator. But I consider it a blessing from the pope. Had I not put in the new woofers, the amp would have largely gone to waste. This new setup is monster. And uses the factory mids, tweeters, and rears! Anyway, I now have a blown ASK 987.1 amp, a mostly good CDR-24, and two perfectly good door woofers if anyone needs them.
