On my 2001 is all one unit, with the lower ball joint so I changed the fronts and the backs along with the springs and shocks and mounts and tons of other stuff but, wow.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1999 966 with 108k miles. New squeak in front, heard at every bump in the road- or when I lean on the front fender when at rest. Where to look- I hold 3 wrenches, but this is my first Porsche and I would rather fix the problem than learn a lesson. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Sounds like a dry ball joint or a worn out control arm bushing. Either way it is necessary to replace very soon.

POST 3Original post

I'd tend to agree - could also be a sway bar bushing, too. We have a comprehensive suspension overhaul article that touches on many of the wear points in your 996, and also details the replacement procedures. It could very well help you pinpoint your annoying squeak! Click here to take a look.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This confirms my suspicions. Thanks to all- this is a great forum!

POST 5Original post

Had same issue at low speeds. Ended up dumping lots of money into the suspension and ended up being the control arm bushings. On my 2001 is all one unit, with the lower ball joint so I changed the fronts and the backs along with the springs and shocks and mounts and tons of other stuff but, wow. Car drives like new.
