Suggestion

If a fan doesn't run on low speed, it is usually a failure of the ballast resistor which controls the speed when on low.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Quick question concerning 996 radiator fans - should they come on and off together on both sides at the same time or are they sequential in any way depending on temperatures? Drivers side popped on today when parking, but passenger side was definitely not. No sign of engine temperature rising higher than normal though but I admit i had not been in any significant traffic prior to stopping. Just wondering if it time to see garage... Thanks, Steve

POST 2Original post

They should both come on at the same time. Either both on low speed, or both on high speed. A bit more detail here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=330170 If a fan doesn't run on low speed, it is usually a failure of the ballast resistor which controls the speed when on low.

POST 3Original post

Hi, I had this on mine a while back; again with the passenger side not working. When I looked under the car the ballast resister looked very corroded. I did not have any noticeable temperature problems though and mine both still worked on high speed. I got mine fixed under warranty. Even though only one had failed they replaced both sides. Good luck getting them fixed...
