This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, just joined the forum to do a bit of research on a 911 (996).
I am thinking about buying one and thought that this seems like a good place to start looking!
I thought about a porsche a few years ago but with two younger children then I always bought something bigger. I have noticed on PH and AT that the 996's seem to be at a very good price at the moment. Is there anything major on these cars that I need to watch for? I assume full history is essential as it would be with any specialist car, but is there any common faults/problems i need to pay particular attention to?
Also, what are these cars like for everyday use? I will be coming from an Audi estate so it will be a massive change!
I am hoping to get one before June as I have a trip to lemans booked
Anyway hello again :bye:
As with any big engined car, if you press the fun pedel lots, then it will drink it's way through the juice. On a run i will get 310 miles out of a £50 tank, normal week it's more like 250miles, all on optimax. Some of the guys have got 30pmg, but that's serious restraint.
All in all I get more than I thought out of mine, certainly not horrific.
Good luck with your search. I ended getting mine from a dealer as there doesn't seem to be any price difference between private, and at least you get some comeback, maybe even a short warranty. Well worth getting an independent check, eother OPC or indy, will cost you a houple of hundered, but will be money well spent.
Got 26mpg on a Scotland to London trip a few months back and that wasn't sitting at 60 the whole way.
Most daily driving for me is commuting in ultra slow stop-start stuff in central london and get 18+ - this is not much worse than my old Alfa 147 which was a 2 litre.
:welcome:
You are looking at an older car, so be prepared for the service/maintenance
bills that will come your way. A set of tyres will cost £700,
then there are all the other bits that will need replacing over time.

There are plenty to choose from at the moment so look around and buy the best available.

Hi and welcome...
Brilliant on fuel for the performance - even at indecent speeds...
Brake pads and discs are a bit pricey though (unless you get them done in Germany like I did).
Be careful with a £16k 996 though... a good PPI could save you many thousands, and/or I would go for the RSJ or Hartech maintenance plans (Slough or Bolton - whichever is nearest)
Happy hunting
Thanks for the info guys, I am in Newcastle Upon Tyne so not sure what I have locally with regards to porsche specialists. I think there is one main dealer (JCT 600) and an independent called "Tom Ferguson". I am not sure what either are like though.
