So, some might recall I have a Cayman S converted by Farnbacher to the GTR. Love it. But there were a few annoying things for me about the car before and after. They were things like no chirp when you lock/unlock the doors with the keyless, the CDR-24's tuner liked to "float" between two stations (94.7 and 96.1, two stations not very close together really), and the power outlet wasn't switched so I had to remember to turn my V1 on and off.
A while back I ordered the CAN bus adapter and the double DIN faceplate kit from the folks in Japan off eBay. I then picked up the mods4cars unit to add the chirp. Spent a couple hours at a time over three days and got it all installed with a Pioneer AVIC-Z1. I hacked the Z1 to not need reverse sense (and not complain about it). I installed a V1 hardwire kit. I did all the radio stuff with a harness I built on the workbench that only needed two hardwired connections (for the CAN bus...I was too lazy to go find the ISO connector I needed to just plug in for that). The V1 runs off the CAN bus adapter's accessory line (along with the radio).
Installed the mods4cars box according to its instructions, though I'm guessing instead of digging out that plug behind the fuse panel I could have probably connected it to the CAN bus in the dash along with the other adapter, but was too lazy to try that. Plus there's just not a lot more room left in the dash for **** with a double DIN nav unit in there.
I didn't do a backup camera yet, but I may still. I may have to remove the entire rear bumper cover for some mods in the future anyway, so that's the time for that. But for now I have a nav unit that I love. I ran an aux cable out so I can plug the iPod in with it, too. No more having to remember to turn off the V1 and the inevitable dead battery from when I forget. No more having to go back and pull the handle to make sure the doors are locked. Plus all the other extra nice features the mod4cars box has (like running the windows down remotely on a hot day). Good times!
