POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Since owning a 911, I've noticed something disturbing that I didn't get before... 1) Driving on the highway, I always get "challenged" by some punk in a Neon, Mustang, M3, etc... 2) People "speed up" when they see you trying to cross an intersection 3) People "speed up" when they see you trying to get into their lane 4) Yesterday, while sitting in the car getting ready for a meeting, I see this parking meter maid (male) go half a block straight to my car while not looking at the other cars, check my parking meter, and then proceed towards the front of my car to give me a ticket. I had to open the door to let him know I literally just parked there and haven't even gotten out of the car yet. He says, "Oh, sorry, I didn't see you in the car." since my car's windows were tinted. So does this happen to all you other 911 owners? This is the only car I've owned where this "car owner hating" has been pretty blunt. Doesn't happen to my Lotus, M3's, Audi's, etc. My RED Boxster S, on the other hand, gets serious respect. People actually STOP to let me into their lane or stop to let me into the intersection, etc...(same with the Ferrari). What gives?

Pics are here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...996-owner.html Seriously, I'm thinking it IS the tint ... But I had no choice in the matter since I bought the car used. If I could remove it without much fuss, I would.

POST 7Original post

I actually get respect when driving the 911, maybe it has something to do with having the 911 on the rear lid, maybe being a Cab with an old grey haired guy driving in a spirited manner too, LOL. On the other hand, when driving the wife's Boxster, every driver in a Bimmer, Audi, 4x4 lifted Diesel wants to race, cut in front of me, tailgate and every other rude driving practice imaginable. It's like I throw them into road rage. And I'm a very courteous driver who doesn't even use a cell phone when in the car. Must really **** them off that I'm driving a chicks car, huh?

POST 8Original post

People do that stuff with all performance automobiles from my experience. Maybe it's jealousy?

POST 9Original post

I get the occasional punk who wants to race - but that's it. Usually I get thumbs up or a nod. Most people seem to ignore it/me - and that's just fine. I do get strange looks in the snow...

We all get racers..... I seem to attract the same Mercedes C63 on the highway... Plus people normally move out of the way when I come up from behind in the car.... I dunno there's all kinds out there.

POST 13Original post

The 911 has definitely brought alot of attention to itself in my town. People stare all the time.

POST 15Original post

I guess I'm lucky I live in an area with much nicer cars than mine I haven't felt the haters wrath, yet.

POST 16Original post

where I live I see so many nice cars mine doesnt even get noticed (nor did the 99') I am not lying when I say I can see as many as many as 10 NICE Porsche's driving from the time I get off the freeway to my house onle a couple miles away... they are everywhere here. (not counting parked ones) My suggestion to you is to keep fresh breath and smile a lot....enjoy your car and dont worry about the "little people"

POST 22Original post

Mabuhay don't feel bad about city traffic. It's full of brain dead actions due to the droning on these people have been raised to drive in. Speed limits and crashing from just staring at the rears of cars for hours makes real lame drivers. Some I'm sure feel they have attained race car driver status if they can get ahead of you for just a second. A down shift and full application of throttle then sharp turn into openings will get the results you need to remember for how to look at the common view of the others driving as comical. Don't forget good braking is half of the story when catching the spot you want. Develop a feel for the performance of other cars around you and make a good shot of power and you should have the space needed to get into holes that open. That or just sink in the quagmire of oblivion city driving will give the car and brain. Of course I'm not the best person to take advise from since my sport bike went down the bike lane for a few miles today. A choice between a couple hours of retarded traffic to get home or rip the hearts out of traffic jammed bumper watchers. There will probably be a lot of people shopping for bikes this weekend Get a 1000cc sportbike and find out what near 1/2hp per pound is like. It's a thriller for sure doing an 8 or 9 second 1/4 mile on a stock factory bike these days. Those annoying drivers **** their pants and give up quick after you open it up. 100mph in first gear? yah it's deadly fast. The 911 is for going slow

POST 23Original post

Sounds like it's location. Boston isn't exactly a big warm fuzzie.

POST 24Original post

Mabuhay: I think it is definately a Boston thing, a bunch of overcompetitive drivers trying to out-do one another....ever notice that Bostonians don't get the "zipper" concept.....they simply shoot down the merging lane and try to "shoehorn" their way into the line.........As a former Bostonian, I would alway get a tuner/slammed car/driver who wanted to race.....but I would have fun on the on ramps and off ramps........ once I left the area, then the other drivers seemed fine. So, IMHO, it is not the tint of the windows, just the competitive nature of Bostonians, especially once they get behind the wheel.

POST 25Original post

"Mass-holes"? One of my first driving experience in Boston was while at a crawl on a freeway, intersecting with a merge lane or something, we were alternating who got to go, when dude next to me didn't want to follow the "left/right/left" order, swung open his driver's door right in-front of me. I had to hit the brakes to not sheer his door off - and in that moment, he dove in front of me. (Actually, I might try that move at my next club race...)

POST 26Original post

No doubt 'Beantown' drivers have a pretty poor reputation period. I cringe when I have to go there, and usually prefer a friend to drive instead, it's pretty insane compared to other NE cities.

POST 28Original post

No issues here... Lots of stares and questions at gas stations but never any negative incidents.

POST 29Original post

I got the same crap to deal with in Brooklyn... my favorite maneuver is when I try to change lanes into the center because dumbass in the left lane is going 50mph with no cars in front of him and wont yield, the typical driver behind me in the center lane will sped up and just drive 50mph right next to me. The block-in happens ALL the time. Challanges from civics, minivans, escalades, etc are so common that I learned to ignore a long time ago.

POST 30Original post

Pretty much the same story here it DC. Either you get the oblivious driver who pays no attention and cuts you off because they are the center of the universe or you get the crazed vigilante in the prius trying to show you, or you get the boy racers. Funny thing, is in traffic, we are all doing no more than 20mph. Is it me or do people seem to be angrier/more obtuse in DC traffic? Hence I choose to drive my SUV most of the time.

POST 31Original post

Maybe move to Cali and no one will notice. 996s just all too common

POST 32Original post

I've always figured the block-ins happen because people are inattentive and aren't paying attention... Never occurred to me that it's intentional. At least we have a dedicated safe place for inattentive people to do their texting, knitting, makeup etc...

POST 36Original post

Maybe it's the yellow calipers that makes them hate you!

POST 37Original post

Hope I'm not too late to this thread.... I've had my 02 911 C2 for about a month now. I've ignored the chasers, let the middle school boys sit in her, and fielded questions from the guys that want one. The usual stuff...right? I had an unusual experience the other day, as I was driving home from my annual physical. I was in the left turn lane at a stoplight, windows down. A redneck pulls up next to me, no looks exchanged, and we sat there for 30 seconds before the light turned green. As I engaged the clutch, the dude yells, "You have a small peni$!". What's up with that? Is my doctor talking? Mark

Ha! I wouldn't worry. Apparently I'm a ***** according to some dude sitting in passenger seat his life partners Jeep Compass. And funny enough, he did the same thing, says it as I'm driving off.

POST 41Original post

Mabuhay, you are correct, some people really dislike P-Cars. The first couple of months that I had mine I had all kinds of issues. Everything from being cut off 3 times by the same driver, (He was in a Saturn) and then he wanted me to get out and fight him? Then I was in a drive thru getting lunch one day and some assh$%# pulls right up on my bumper and taps me, I get out and his truck is still touching my bumper and I say, would you mind moving, he laughed and backed up. (No Damage though!) To being pulled over by the police for what they called a "Random Stop". Just last week I was driving down one of the local highways doing the speed limit and I see a cop out of the side of my eyes, so I just keep doing what I am doing, then I pull up to a blinking light to turn left, this cop races up from a half a mile back and pulls right up on me, I see he is running my plates, and then he follows me for about a half a mile and then he turns around? I asked my brother in law who has a Ferrari if this happens to him with the police, he said yes. They always think the car is his Dad's or they think the car is stolen. The police have no idea how much you can buy a Porsche for, in their eyes if you look under 70, then you must have stolen it. (I am in my mid 40's) So to answer your question, there are a lot of people that don't like P-Cars...But try living in Detroit where everyone hates Diamler Benz for taking over Chrysler.....A lot of People here hate anything German......Which is why I think I was having so many issues at first? But these days I just take easy, I stay away from people and to be honest, I drive a lot different then when I first bought the P-Car...Almost more mellow at times.

POST 42Original post

hahahaha @ markman - too funny!! you know if you grow your hair out and let it whip in the wind.... that same guy will get a really "funny" look on his face right after (having zoomed up along side of you) he looks at you with a big ole dumb a$$ grin...... the only thing I can say is I bet he doesnt tell his buddies he was checking out "some dude" LMAO!!

POST 43Original post

All this reminds me of a joke my mother told me when I got my first 944. An elephant is walking through the jungle, and he hears a mouse calling for help. He follows the voice and finds the mouse stuck in a deep hole, and he can't get out. The elephant says, "don't worry little guy, I'll save you." The elephant straddles the hole, lowers his dick down, and the mouse scampers up to freedom. A few days later, the mouse hears a cry for help - it's the elephant stuck in a giant hole. The mouse squeaks, "Don't worry I'll get you out." Of course the elephant doesn't believe him. But within a few minutes, the mouse drives his Porsche to the edge of the hole, ties a rope to the back, throws the other end of the rope to the elephant and pulls him out. Moral of the story, if you have a large *****, you don't need a Porsche!

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 7702445

You've got to love a joke like that from your mom!!! I haven't had any issues where I live (about 1 hour north of NYC). What I find is that normally people will move out of the left lane for me, I'm not on their butt, although being speed yellow, they tend to see me and move over. On the other hand, if I'm driving into the city, most "ricers" try to race me on the parkways. I just keep driving like they are not there.

POST 47Original post

Ah come on. Just give in and learn the rev limit of every gear and the best torque point in rpms of each gear and shift accordingly when wanting to get your happy spot in traffic. Sure it's a morons mentality while driving in congested traffic but it sure is fun letting a blast or two go getting your happy spot to go back to being one of the trapped cows being herded to slaughter. Actually it's best to just move to Germany where better minds rule the laws and cruise like a sane man.

I think the best way to handle someone who questions your manhood is to say "maybe my ***** is small, but my ***** are huge and your wife didn't seem to mind." Works even better if the wife or girl friend is in the car.

Im a part time 911 driver and live in an area where there are many. When not driving my car and in the sedan, other 911 drivers are a pain the ***. They come racing up on the back of you, swerve in and out of traffic like jerks. Unfortunately its the 996/997 drivers that really should own what i call the"my first sports car" which is the M3, that way the rest of us that drive normally don't get thrown into the bunch.

In south central pa, i can go weeks w/o seeing a porsche sometimes. But i guess when you work mon-fri, you noramlly see the same cars. But i do see a yellow ferrari sometimes going the opposite direction

There a TONS of Cayenne's on the roads here.. pretty much invisible when I'm not busy cutting off those jerks in 911's or matching their speed so they cant change lanes... baastads..

The German car brand name/model has the "*****" on the inside............ we've probably all heard them before, ..... but, we know if they had the way/means, etc., they would be sittin' behind the wheel with a huge *** smile on their faces.......

POST 62Original post

I think Porsche drivers are fairly tame....myself included....the way I drive if traffic is sparse....Im in it...if traffic is moderate to heavy I drive with the flow. I CANNOT stand people who weave in and out of traffic, straight line speed in sparse traffic is ok....I do not rock cars either...not nice and dont like it done to me. Ive never had an issue with anyone on the road and when the occasion is present and there is another "cool" car on the road Ill play a bit as long as there is no traffic. Not a fan of involving uninvolved or innocent people in my fun/stupidity. If I hit a tree or a guardrail...its on me but I refuse to put myself in a position to hit another car. Now dont get me started on M3 drivers......total *****.

POST 63Original post

I was thinking of this thread today when some dolt at work had the audacity to say to me... "three Porsche's, who are you trying to impress" I said, ME!!! Any idiot who spends 30 seconds with me can figure out I am a car nut, geeez my office has car art on the walls, pictures and model or 2 on my desk. Like most of you I would have 10+ cars if I could! jaggoff probably does not let Porsche's merge into traffic!

Sheeze not trying to impress anyone. Trying to drive a real nice car instead of a fall on its face standard issue clunker for being dangerous doing even 55 and hitting the brakes to avoid lame stuff on the road. Maybe just ask the guy what he drives and walk aay laughing since he seems threatened by your happiness your laughing could throw him off the ledge.

I think the funny one is jockeying for position for a hole and it turns out the other guy was trying to get into your lane while you are trying to get into his lane. Some guys just don't use blinkers possibly because they think it just lets others plan ahead to block their lane change.

I've never known what to say to people who toss out these "drive-by insults." But....I think I've got it. Guy: you must be worried about your ***** size to own that car... You: Apparently you've spent a lot of time worring about ***** size. What do you suppose is causing you to do that? Have you seen a counsellor to help you with that? Guy: I was talking about You! You: Well, you brought it up. It must have been on your mind. You might seek some help. Guy: Who are you trying to impress with that? You: Apparently you've spent a lot of time worring about trying to impress people. What do you suppose is causing you to do that? Have you seen a counsellor to help you with that? Quotes source post: 7705974

I honestly think this isn't always conscious. I used to, but I realized that the problem is often the fact that people can hear my car coming. The sound makes them accelerate reflexively. There are plenty of jerks around here, no doubt. But I think most people are simply oblivious and barely engaged in driving, never mind plotting to drive you crazy.

POST 76Original post

Speaking of "hearing" your car... One thing that happens now and that is I'm driving down a side street and someone standing in front of their house yells SLOW DOWN! yet I'm probably doing 15-20 miles per hour. Blow by the same person in the wifes Audi at 35 and they don't even look. I do not speed down side streets, too many kids & dogs! Usually it's a mom type or a grumpy old "get off my lawn" old guy

Then point out that I have 2 spedometers (in the 996) and that I was going 18mph in a 25......and repeat... how fast whould you like me to drive.. yup, like Marc said... POST 81Original post

I definitely notice people go out of their way to get in my way when I'm in my bucket, but I think some of them are actually just trying to get a better look at a 911. I often do this whenever I see an exotic Lambo or *gasp* Ferrari just because it's exciting to see and hear one in motion.

Not the way I drive. Old ladies get up and yell, "Is that all the faster you can go? WTF??? Why own that thing??? Get a Yugo!" By the 3rd or 4th rant, I've usually made it past their house so I can pretend I didn't hear them.

POST 87Original post

I actually ran into a far younger version of myself yesterday. Coming out of the grocery store, heading to my car I see a boy (probably around 10 years old) and his mother getting out of there minivan. The boy walked up past my car and looked in the side window as his mom was walking inbetween a few cars that were closer to the door of the supermarket. He sees me push the key to unlock the door and says "Nice Porsche!" I smiled and said "thank you!" he walked backwards the rest of the way towards the door of the grocery store as his mom said, "watch where your going!!!" That was me 20 years ago. Not everyone hates Porsche 911 Drivers...........

They can be super aggressive sometimes especially those Truckerfu@kers,(big duallies, trucks with lift kits as tall as TRAFFIC LIGHTS with huge tires that ride your ***, ricers, and anyone else must be jealous of 911's. That was my trip back to NY from Louisville, KY when I got my car. My wife was the one who noticed that any car that we passed that had a kid (or really any male) in it was taking a look at the car. We haven't seen that much attention since we're home, but how many times do you see a yellow C4S going through West Virginia?

POST 101Original post

Try a Ferrari...it was crazy EVERY kid in a mustang/hopped up ricer would pull up next to you then DS and roar off. And dont even mention valets, they ALL expected 20 bucks after the "i'll put it up front for you sir" scam. I have several high end rides and I never given em more than a few bucks...what do I care if he has to run 3 blocks for it? I put maybe 1000 miles on the Ferrari in a year, then sold it. Tempermental junk next to P car anyways (OK, it was a 328)....but briefly fulfilled a fantasy P cars dont have the poser image that many of the exotics have, the P car driver seems to be viewed more as an enthusiast and person of sport/taste more than the gold chain set IMO. the only exception would be some of the shows I have been to where we do, unfortunately, have the trailer queen "manhattan trophy" set. to each his own...

POST 106Original post

Quotes source post: 7725762

Hmmmm, a 328... Maybe not the best example of Ferrari to use... unless you're Magnum P.I. Valet probably doesn't want to drive that too far without power brakes, windows or steering and if he does I'd be worried, it's got the turning radius of a 747. No, I dare say any 996 is superior to a 328, any decent riser can beat it and they know it. I've got a few nice rides too but you won't see me try to upstage Porsche's with a Ferrari on a Porsche blog. And whats wrong with trailer queens, most of those are like track cars (they're just not made to go on the pot hole filled roads). I say if you've got the $ whats wrong with having an extra ride that's designed to the extreme specifically for shows? Sorry for the rant, but uuuuhm well... I just couldn't help myself. Like you said to each his own. Sid.

POST 107Original post

I would think people hate porsche from seeing the look of others when they look at your car. It's more of an anguish they feel and display with the way they are stuck in a putt putt car. While their brain overloads on the miracle cure wife turned pain in the tail thoughts. When they get flash backs of younger years figuring they'd be driving a nice car. There's also the guys thinking about the broken bones and even skull they got working and they still don't get paid enough to drive the fancy sports car. It's not hating the porsche, it's the hating not having one most see in the faces. Unless of course the guys headed your way with a gun then I'm pretty sure it's a porsche hating cop or car jacker. Not much difference there

POST 108Original post

I mostly get admiring looks when driving the car - and I am sure its the car since I look like Frankenstein with a hangover. I have had one guy speed up on me when overtaking but the power of the 911 saw him off pretty quickly. Parking is the real risk. Both on the street and at work. Workplace jealousy is a real problem for me - so its never brought to work and only rarely parked on the street for very brief periods. My BMW 318iS was my worst car in this regard. Even though it only had a small engine for a BMW it looked stunning so this may have been part of the reason.

They will for a while - when they get used to seeing it around they just ignore it - except those who may not have seen it before. I drive many unusual cars and people only stare at me if they see me in a Corrolla or some such.

POST 110Original post

Love the thread. I just got my first Porsche 2 weeks ago...and like many here - a final realization after lots of hard work to finally own a no compromise sports car. I actually have been very modest when people compliment the car or give me (ok - the car) a curious stare. I just say thank you and smile. I don't want to flaunt the car...but every time I hear the purr of the engine...that young kid inside smiles very wide. I haven't had too many stories - but I expect to get all of these at some point in the future...however yesterday this lady in a Honda Accord kept going fast/slow beside me (while I was on Cruise) then eventually took off doing about 85 on the interstate.....to my amusement I passed her about 15 minutes later with state patrol writing her a ticket. === 2002 911 Turbo w/X50

Lets face it, when you own a Porsche, get used to looks, good and bad, and folks who want to race you.

POST 115Original post

I've only had my car since June, but have gotten some nice complements. What surprises me the most are the kids who not only love the car, but know what it is. When I pulled into my driveway with the car for the first time, my neighbor's nine year old son came running out. "Is that your nine-eleven?" He's like the kid in the Porsche commercial..."See you in about 20 years". His mother says he like fast cars and fast women. Not sure about the women part, but he knows his cars. I had another experience like that one yesterday. I was behind a Vette at a stop sign. The Vette takes off and a kid on a bicycle shouts to me "Nice car!" He never said anything to the other driver. I parked the car at the far end of a parking lot. I guy in a huge pickup truck parks right next to me and I'm thinking to myself "What an F'ing moron!" The guy opens his window and says "Beautiful car, I've always wanted one." But I've also gotten 4 dings during the ten or fifteen times I briefly parked the car in a parking lot. Not a great ratio. In that respect I miss my Saturn, with its rubber doors and fenders. Of course, the ride was a bit different

POST 116Original post

My old 71 428 starfire thunderbird and me were sitting outside a grocery store finishing a cigarette before going in a long time ago in the 80's. I'm sitting there wondering what the repeated over and over again banging is on the passenger side of my car. I look over and some fat lady was just ramming and ramming her door into mine trying to get out of her car. She was so fat it was her door rammed against mine as she leaned into my car barely squeezing here 300-400 pound lard out of her car. Yah there's some real idiots out there and they will never have any concern for anybody elses cars when they are damaging them.
