Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I wonder if my little rattle noise is the famous 996 intermediate shaft issue? I have a little rattle noise from the engine for a short time when i start the engine after a day rest. There are no noise if I start the engine after a short time only after a long time. Could it be only a hydraulic lifter that need to be pressured? Regards tom

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry I forgot to mansion that is a 2000 car with 16000 km.

POST 3Original post

The startup rattle is usually just timing chain and not IMS. Changing to a 5w40 from 0w40 oil improved my rattle. If IMS worry is causing you to lose sleep at night, upgrading the bearing is pretty straightforward and not too expensive. It also has fewer side effects than Lunesta.

POST 4Original post

mine made that noise this morning after not being run for 5 days. it diminished in direct proportion to oil pressure coming up. timing chain rattle.

POST 5Original post

Mine did this. I thought I had a timing chain or IMS going or something else horrible. I finally discovered that I have something loose inside my muffler. Apparently these mufflers tend to come unwelded inside and the baffling material comes loose. Crawl under the car and hit the muffler with a rubber mallet or a tennis shoe and see if you get a rattle.

POST 6Original post

IMS issues are rare. Most of the time its a lifter or even the timing chain housings. 996 engines are noisy engines to begin with. Not to under stated the problem of the IMS but the failure rate is very low for the amount of 996 cars they sold. I owned one and didn't have an issue with it. Buddies in my club own them and had have had no issues. I do know a guy who had to have two engines put in for the issue, but really out of knowing about 20 guys with 996's non turbo's I know one who had a IMS issue. Now engine cylinder scoring and cracking. That is a bigger problem. I'm sure you sound is a noisy lifter.
