I cant deal without MP3s for much longer.
So the question is...
Buy the pioneer AVIC d3 plus kit and install ~ $1500
or wait for the porsche ipod adapter ~ $500 plus god only knows install
Any thoughts are appreciated.
For me it would depend on a few things:
(1) how long until the porsche solution comes out (Ken, any idea you can share)
(2) do you want nav too, b/c the AVIC is supposed to be a good nav system
(3) some people prefer to only use factory stuff, etc, even if it may not be the "best tech" out...that could sway some towards the porsche option.
I have waited this long, so I am going to wait a little more for solid Porsche details...
Only $599.00 USD here,.. This is USA, where everything is very cheap! I would think you could find quality install for < $900.00
Am I correct that this unit is NOT active GPS?

.
I will be going with this. What do you mean NOTactive GPS?
I have an AVIC d3 in my fj cruiser, it is a fabulous nav system. Garmin is slightly easier to use but the phone number search is untouchable as far as the pioneer nav goes. Sound Quality is excellent as well. I was just thinking how troublesome it can be to install new systems in these cars. I suppose its worth a go though. Especially at 599...thats an INCREDIBLE price!
Looks like Im ordering the kit off ebay this week.
Thanks for the info.
FWIW, the ipod kit for the pioneer is easily the best/fastest ipod connection around.
You might consider getting an iTrip for $20-$30 which will tide you over until the Porsche kit comes out.
Can the AVIC-d3 be installed on the CS with the BOSE system installed?
It can be, but new speaker wire will have to be pulled because of the BOSE optical bus. (I would have to trust an installer a lot to pull all that cable)
I can't fault BOSE because their crappy home theater systems use a proprietary optical wire too.
Thanks for picking BOSE, Porsche.
Once great feature of the pioneer is XM nav traffic which is $3/month i recall.
It routes around traffic and accidents... For us in TX, only houston has the traffic speed data. Cali is littered with the transmitters though, and it worked real well there.

One of the big gripes with the unit was the one DVD drive which means to play CDs or watch video, you would have to remove the Nav DVD. With a video ipod, this point is mute.... the pioneer will play everything on the ipod.
This CNET article shows what the nav looks like, and what the ipod screen looks like:

Wow, I typed a lot more than i thought i would, but I dont work for pioneer, I have just used a couple of their Nav systems.
Better than all the OEM systems I've used though.
I have a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 in my hummer. I hate it, because the navigation part of the system is so bad. In one little town the dumb b**** sent me in a complete circle and then tried to get me to do it again. The estimated arrival times are way off. The saftey mode is crazy. You almost can't do anything without the e-brake on. Oh yeah, I had to bypass the Bose system too.
I would like to replace it with the Kenwood DD6019. Garmin built the Kenwood nav unit and does a far better with navigation than Pioneer. In fact I keep a Garmin dash-top unit with me to use when "she" gets lost.
