Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hate the sound from my Cayman 's non- BOSE system . Is it the speakers or is it the PCM head unit? I want to keep the head unit and replace the speakers, crossovers and amp(s). And add a small sub. Will this really make it sound good if I keep the stock headunit?

POST 2Original post

Hey Kor. I don't think you are going to achieve a real great result without removing the head unit. See my post here: http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-electronics/16714-cayman-speaker-size.html You can improve with all you've suggested, but it will never sound great. In order to get quality sound, you need to run a line level out to a clean amplifier with good speakers. I think a small sub is a must, not to rattle windows, but just to cycle down to all levels of the music. Good luck. I opened a can of worms and didn't know where to stop. I am very happy with my results. Brian

POST 3Original post

Agree with BrianS. I haven't messed with my Cayman yet but have spent major time with stereo upgrades in other cars. My experience is the weakest link is the headunit. On the plus side you can invest in the amp or amps and speakers and if it does not make the improvement you want you can go to the headunit and already have the other part done. There is are several great sites for car audio info. Caraudio.com, elitecaraudio.com, carstereo.org are just a few.
