Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Anybody replaced one of these units looks a bit of a nightmare there is a wire running through the unit, so it looks like a total replacement, any info would be appreciated
Leading evidence: 'Run through the unit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run through the unit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. first try removing using your hands to twist it but usually they are quite stiff and you will need grips to get it off, obviously taking off a broken mirror you don't really care to grip and mess up the metal of the stalk but best to use a towel or something soft when replacing in the jaws to not mess up the replacement

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys just been out to clean the inside of the windscreen and I damaged the ball socket on the rear view mirror.
Anybody replaced one of these units looks a bit of a nightmare there is a wire running through the unit, so it looks like a total replacement, any info would be appreciated

Could you post a picture of the mirror you have, having a wire means it will be auto-dimming rather than the standard mirror but this could then either be the factory auto-dimming mirror or the tequipment one that could be added to your car by an OPC after purchase which matches an audi part?
The Teqipment auto-dimming mirror is the same as an audi mirror, this video will show you how to change it, he shows how to put one back on around the 3 min mark and to remove is the exact same process in reverse.

if you need to replace this mirror and want to maintain auto-dimming then it's a good idea to look up the Audi part as it's identical but costs about a third of the price of people listing them as the Porsche part, picked up mine when I converted from standard to auto-dimming for around £35
If you have a factory auto-dimming mirror then have a look at this thread when the instruction are given:
https://www.renntech.org/topic/45772-auto-dimming-rear-view-mirror-removal-question/
I think the factory mirror is Porsche specific so unfortunately is a fair bit rarer and more expensive to find one on the second hand market.
I have had another look and it is the auto dimmer type there a push button on the front which turned a green LED on and off, and a small push switch on the back mounting which switches a small orange LED at the bottom of the rear mounting on and off
There does not appear to be any separation lines on the back mounting.
Will try to post some pictures tomorrow.
Don't seem able to load any more pictures don't know why
But looking at the one I did can you tell me what type it is, and do you split the outer shell along the bottom split in the picture.
Will try to load more later on.
Steve
Yours is the factory auto dimming mirror, I've personally only had experience with the standard and tequipment one but the Renntech link I previously sent details how to remove your one. Hope that helps.
