Suggestion

As you are looking for maybe a change back into a coupe - then the Cayman R is going to give you a similar feedback but at a louder volume - with the added stiffness of the fixed roof.

Suggestion

The 981 generation made me want to have a test drive and when I did, it was brilliant enough to entice me out of a 911 997 GTS into a Cayman GTS.

Suggestion · Original poster

i need to test drive a ss cgts manual of course but from what is being said the gts sounds like a no no then,as for the caymanR although a great car just doesnt have the wow factor visually and feels and looks like a tighter cs unlike a spyder which i bought in favour of the R!so what coupe does that leave me with?

Suggestion

I couldn't get a test drive in a GTS at my OPC after numerous attempts and driving a 981 S instead, in the end they gave me a complimentary PEC day at silverstone in a GTS.

Suggestion

not really - the ultimate final level isn't there but the overall package gives me all the confidence I would ever need to use my skills to adapt - the front end is direct, responsive, accurate and I have PTV which includes LSD for rear end traction.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thinking of advertising my Spyder as it will not get used to spring time now so by then we will know all about the GT4 if it turns out to be all hype and no substance then a cayman Gts might be on my radar as I want to get back into a coupe!or am I being foolish and keep the spyder as it's a hard act to follow!if I were to buy a caymanR then you might as well have a Gts on sports suspension. Anyone done this and thoughts please?

POST 2Original post

GTS is just a nice car, yes a very nice car, but nothing like your Spyder imo. Cayman R is a far better feeling car to drive than any GTS model. all depends what you want and only you know that by driving them. GTS to me is a strange one as you can fit X73 to a normal Cayman, I don't get the hype over them, but that's just me. when you start specing up nice options on the GTS it can be easy >£70k if the GT4 is only £65k + options it makes the GTS look way over priced. like the 991 GT3 VS 991 GTS either the GT3 is too cheap or the GTS is too expensive. Same could happen when the GT4 is out and quite a few people have specced GTS's to the eyeballs at >£75k on here.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

But if you could buy a new CR or a New cayman Gts circa same money what would you buy? The caymanR never looked special to me so a cayman GTS is like a new CR with electric steering whereas I would not swap a spyder for a boxster Gts as the spyder looks special! Pound for pound buying a cayman Gts over a cs is a no brainier!and with discount might be able to get a new preregistration car for circa £58k

POST 4Original post

Cayman R everytime over a GTS The R is something special and in rare limited numbers so is and will be more desirable over a GTS A true drivers car for the road and track happy at either how many models can say that.

POST 5Original post

As I say you need to drive them, neither to me is worth £60k I paid £45k for my R and the GT4 is going to be £65k with a bigger engine in it. A new Cayman R and a new GTS would never even be in the running, I would be looking at V10 R8's or some thing you could easy loose 20k on a GTS (def 10k) even at 60k. where your Spyder is still going up in Value. I also think if you buy nice R the prices are rock solid and it just feels better to drive, looks wise, well I am inside it cannot see it .... only you know what you want, 12 months ago you see 997.1 GT3 were £65k and many people went that route. best buy for me is a V10 R8 now, it's a lot of car for £60k

Pound for pound buying a cayman Gts over a cs is a no brainier!and with discount might be able to get a new preregistration car for circa £58k For me.. whilst i appreciated the 987 Cayman/Boxster - I just didn't like the looks/styling enough for me to ever consider buying one The 981 generation is much more confident - the styling is more mature and a direction of its own as a mid-engine platform - styling cues directly from the Carrera GT supercar. The 981 generation made me want to have a test drive and when I did, it was brilliant enough to entice me out of a 911 997 GTS into a Cayman GTS. The Boxster Spyder is truly special in terms of its ethos and much more unique/stand out in terms of features than the Cayman R. As you are looking for maybe a change back into a coupe - then the Cayman R is going to give you a similar feedback but at a louder volume - with the added stiffness of the fixed roof. 981 platform is the next step along. There is a little loss in the full detail of feedback for the sake of better comfort, quailty and intelligent performance. For me, do I miss the steering feedback from my 997? not really - the ultimate final level isn't there but the overall package gives me all the confidence I would ever need to use my skills to adapt - the front end is direct, responsive, accurate and I have PTV which includes LSD for rear end traction. I agree, if you look at the options you'd like for a 981 Cayman S - most of them may already be included in the GTS package so if can make good sense. I was originally thinking about a Cayman S but I really wanted an interior that was as similar as possible to my 997 GTS - when the GTS was released it sealed the deal for me. Discounts on new order cars are minimal for the GTS so if you can pick something up from a dealership pre-order good on you.

POST 9Original post

I'd had extended loans of both the Spyder and Cayman R, but never driven a 981 Cayman S or GTS. Personally I think the Spyder is the pick of the bunch, it offers more and has the unique styling. If you've decided to go back to a coupe a 997.1 GT3 would be the sensible step (a 997.2 GTS being the more usable option).

POST 11Original post

Tricky one, I've been going through a very similar decision, I also decided for GTS money I could have a 996 GT3. I couldn't get a test drive in a GTS at my OPC after numerous attempts and driving a 981 S instead, in the end they gave me a complimentary PEC day at silverstone in a GTS. I'm glad I did because I relised 2 things: 1. It made my Gen 1 987 S feel old, the 981 and the GTS with PDK in particular feel like a huge jump in technology, sports exhaust in this car is how a PSE should be unlike the 987 option, it was an incredible car in many respects. 2. It didn't feel special enough and driving left me feeling a bit detached from the car and road/track. Coupled with the fact I knew it was going to lose £20k whilst in my ownership (particularly given they're not really very limited in number) I decided to go with a 987 R. The 981 GTS is great if you like gadgets and tech but it lacks the driver involvement that the 987 R has, it wasn't a hard choice from there for me. Edited by Beanoir on Thursday 4th December 18:08
