Some people have gotten lucky, got their way into the front, disconnected the battery for a while and put a new fresh charged battery on which can wake the car from the slumber.

Then connect your battery charger, positive to the live terminal in the bay, and the negative to the latch for a clean earth.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello This is my first post and I couldn't have dreamt it would have been about the issue I'm having at the moment. I own a 2003 996 c4s. Car is wonderful when I get the chance to drive. Today was one of them days where I could go out for a spin I unlocked the car, put the key in and no lights, nothing at all, its been about 5 days since the last start. Usually the battery weakens but I can get it going. I try to open the frunk, no power so no go I read the manual, left the key in the door handle applied power to the fuse in the foot-well The horn alarm goes as per the manual I then tried to turn the key in the handle to disable the horn as well as try to press the switch for the frunk but the horn alarm doesn't turn off and neither does the frunk open I also tried to put the key in the ignition to maybe see if that turns the horn off but it doesnt The horn alarm I noticed takes a breather for a few seconds then starts off again. So at this point I think i'll get myself a charger to trickle charge the battery through the cigarette lighter which I think is live in the gen 2 996 However, before packing up for the day I thought I'll give it one more try I try to close the door but its not really closing almost like misaligned - im guesing due to the window. Anyways, I got the door shut, and I locked it. I now try to unlock it and the door handle lifts but the door doesnt open So I am now stuck with a car where the door will not open, the locking wheel nut is in the car and the car has no power Passenger side door has no key lock and I am truly stuck I have searched the net and seen that you can manually undo the funk cable by reaching into the arch but without the wheel will it be possible? Does anybody have any ideas or seen this kind of scenario before? Any help much appreciated

POST 2Original post

There's a cable behind the front bumper/wheel lining for such an occasion is there not? Locate, yank and you'll be in the front and able to charge it up

Welcome to 911uk :welcome: , Sorry to hear that your first post is one of grief. Have read through the post below and see if you find it useful; http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=56267&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

POST 4Original post

Yeah Welcome to the club and thanks for prompting me to check mine before I get the same problem.

POST 5Original post

The write-up is for a Gen 1 996 but I think it's pretty similar for the Gen 2. I'd be trying to get the rear one behind the rear light unit, then get the jump leads on the posts in there.

POST 6Original post

For Facelift cars (Gen 2), you need to take off the driver's footwell fuse box cover and there is a connection there for 12V, you pull out the connector marked with a bonnet symbol. Use a spare battery or jump leads as a battery charger won't do it. Connect the negative terminal to an earthing point (door check link?) That will give you a 12V feed so you can open the bonnet with the door cill switch. It's well described in the owners handbook if you have one.

POST 8Original post

Sorry, I only read the top bit where he opened it.

POST 9Original post

The cable hides here. Couple of trim panel levers make things easier. Then connect your battery charger, positive to the live terminal in the bay, and the negative to the latch for a clean earth.

POST 10Original post

The actual earth post in the back there is the bolt that clamps the airbox down, hence why it's shaped like it is. As seen on the right of the lid clasp at the centre bottom of the photo:

POST 11Original post

Just re-read this bit. Sorry to say it, but you're now a bit pot luck as to whether you'll have to do something drastic Mine ended up in this scenario as a specialist indy garage didn't refit the barrel mechanism properly when fitting a new door mech for me. That meant the car went into sleep mode and, because the barrel wouldn't turn the mech to wake her up, the rest is history, as they say. Some people have gotten lucky, got their way into the front, disconnected the battery for a while and put a new fresh charged battery on which can wake the car from the slumber. If it doesn't, however, then you need to be able to turn the microswitch of the door mech in order to wake it back up - and that ain't easy. The root cause for you could be that the barrel attachment piece has disintegrated. It happens - there's a screwdriver like piece that fits via 'tabs' to the end of the barrel so as the barrel turns, so does the screwdriver head, and flicks the microswitch over. They're cheap nasty things from the VAG parts bin and suffer a bit of rot. If the tabs break, then the screwdriver head doesn't turn and you don't get any unlocking action. If you want a new one from Porsche it'll cost you a couple of hundred quid or so for a new inner handle assembly  Luckily, the cheap VAG parts bin option is much easier and cheaper: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Door-Loc...537255?hash=item3feddbafe7:g:jd4AAOSwJX5frqdb Hope it works out without you having to put your window through. Cruelest thing I've ever had to do to my car

POST 13Original post

I'm guessing using the earth post will give you a better chance of shunting some power back in there as it bolts straight into the chassis/frame. It's in the handbook.

POST 14Original post

Can you guess where the handbook was at the time  It did the job fine - albeit ultimately to no gain, as I had to force access anyway.

POST 15Original post

Your last photo turns my stomach :yuk:
