The clips location was to hard to get to so I fastened it with a velcro strip until I decide to replace the tank which will allow me to access it and put in the proper hose clip support.

It does seem to be sagging lower, and I can push it up using considerable force.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just noticed that it looks like my coolant expansion tank may have broken free from it's top support. It does seem to be sagging lower, and I can push it up using considerable force. Can anyone confirm from the photos that this is the case? I don't have any pictures of how it looked in the past to compare it to. It's still solidly attached and doesn't jiggle much, but as I said it looks like it's dropped down and I can push it up so the white plastic of the tank goes back up into what appears to be the top support.

POST 2Original post

Yes, the tank is not engaged into the black bracket. Either it slip out (can't imagine how) or someone didn't engage it fully when installing the tank. You may need to disconnect the coolant hoses attached to the tank and move the tank around to reengage that bracket.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm guessing that perhaps it pulls out to the right (towards passengers side) when all the screws and hoses are out? Then it appears it may slide in from right to left. Here is a pic (rotated counter clockwise 90 degrees) showing black plastic debris that may have broken off and resting on the top of the tank. Could someone who was putting on the cap pushed down with enough force to break the bracket? Seems like very thick rigid plastic used on this bracket.

POST 4Original post

Yes, that's possible and yes, the tank slides out toward the passenger side.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That piece of black plastic in post #3 turned out to be part of the top bracket that broke off. I suspect the guys at the shop that did the latest work on my car did this. I had the latest version of the tank cap (ending in 4) on it, and the car came back with an earlier version. They said that they thought the cap was leaking and replaced it. They didn't charge me, but didn't make sure the replacement was the latest version. Any way the one that is on there now is doing fine. I do remember one of the guys taking the cap off and then replacing it, and I remember him really pushing down hard. So hard that I remember saying to myself in my head "why is he pushing down so hard?" So just to update, I took off the blower for more access and removed the screw and just basically pulled the tank to the right and it fell out and down even more. Then I just lifted it up and pushed it in as hard as I could and it went it fine and is sitting up where it should be even with the little bit of plastic broken off of the mount. It's nice and tight and has stayed in place so far. Considering it fixed until new tank is needed. While I was doing this I noticed the 2" hard coolant line that runs directly below the expansion tank was loose. Turns out a support clip must have failed as I could see where it had snapped off. The clips location was to hard to get to so I fastened it with a velcro strip until I decide to replace the tank which will allow me to access it and put in the proper hose clip support.
