He told me that you can still get the Porsche SSK, but now it's a dealer installed item not an option.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I just had my $199 B&M from Bumperplugs installed. Took about 1.5 hours, $150 for the install. I'll give out the name of the shop that did the install here in SoCal if anyone requests it.
Like others have posted here - if you've had the opportunity to compare the OEM shifter with the short shifter, it's a dramatic difference. It's like driving a completely different car. I'm finding I have to re-learn my throttle/clutch finesse because the shift throws are so short (and subsequently quicker).
Highly recommended mod!
How does the B&M shifter compare to the factory short shifter? Are they about the same "shortness", or is the B&M shorter? Did you notice much increase in shift effort?
Thanks!
Unfortunately I really can't say, as I have no experience with the factory short shifter.
As for shift effort - my initial perception is that the throws are a little stiffer, especially when the engine is cold. However, it is more than made up for with the short throw and increased shift precision - when you shift you can really feel the "gates".
Chaseman,
The shop is Eurorev, a small Eurocar tuning shop in Gardena. They charge a flat $150 to install. They tune Mercedes-Benz,
BMW
,
Audi
, and Porsche, and they will also do installs from TechArt, Rinspeed, etc. You can get more information at
www.eurorev.com
and call them to make an appointment.

I hope someone with more knowledge will post, but I believe that B&M is the company that makes the OEM shifter. So they would be the same thing if true? Anyone else know?
ivanhoe I believe you're correct. I remember reading someone's post just a day or two ago about this topic. He had said they make two version of the ss. I think the aftermarket one was even shorter than the factory optioned one. I can't really imagine that as it's plenty short enough. At least for my liking.
Anyways I'm sure Interpol will learn to enjoy the CS even more now.
You definitely save coin going witht the SS by B&M. I have the OEM SS and it was a great mod...although, i dont really remember now how the standard shifter really felt. enjoy...
I'm scheduled to have the Porsche SS kit installed on Monday. They had my car through the weekend to take care of some initial issues with my "new" car and I figured I'd have them do everything at once. The kit I'm having installed is nearly twice the price of the B&M. Plus, the dealership wants around $300 to install it.
Is this a rip off? Could you run into warranty issues with the after-market kit? I suppose if you ever had any problems you'd have to prove that those problems were not caused by either the kit or the install.
$300 dollars is pretty outrageous for a shifter install. if you have never done it before and you really took your sweet time it would be 2hrs. i wouldn't be surprised that if their techs could knoock it out in less than hour, so $300 dollars per hour labor rate, and you don't even get dirty! i put one in my buddies 996 and it really is an easy job, if you are the least bit mechanically inclined do it yourself.
You need to tell your dealership to check the Authorized Porsche billable time allowed for this, which is 1.5 hours. Of course a dealership can charge more but if they are then it it just pure profit for them. If their labor rate is $100/hr then it should cost you $150, now if their labor rate is $200/hr then it would be $300, so what is their labor rate per hour, multiply by 1.5x and that is what Porsche says to its dealers that it "should" cost.
I installed my B&M SS on Saturday. If I were to do it again I would have paid to have it installed. I am fairly mechanically inclined, and often work on my motorcycles and truck. I just changed the Cayman's oil last weekend. It was more annoying that pleasurable. There were too many pieces that needed to be removed just so you could get to another little piece.
I have installed a SS on my
Acura
a few years back.
I have heard from a few people that B&M makes the SS for Porsche.
I wouldn't call it a simple 'drop in' installation. However, you do not need to modify anything to install it. There is a DIY short shifter install article on this site; it applies to the B&M as well.
B and M shifter installation problems
I have just finished installing my B and M SS. The installation was not a real
problem until you have the base of the shifter out and try to install the B and
M bushings into the base unit. THEY DO NOT FIT. No amount of coaxing or
lubrication will get them in place. I had to sand the opening larger w/ a dowel rod wrapped in sandpaper to enlarge the opening enough to get the bushings in. This is similar to what VideoDoctor had to do w/ his installation of the EVO short shifter. See his article on his installation.
Other than enlarging the opening for the bushings, the installation was not bad and I am a novice at this kind of thing. \
The shifter is really worth the time to install it. I really love the thing and it works well. :burnout:
I have the OEM short shifter in my car and just did an install of a B&M on a customer's car.
The shortness of the throw is about equal. However, the feel is completely different.
The B&M feels like all aftermarket short shifter kits with a slightly notchy feel, increase in effort, and has a small "clunk" sound in shifting. It does feel much better than stock though.
The OEM short shifter feels just as smooth and same level of effort as stock, but with a shorter throw and a more precise feel. It feel more "polished" without the aftermarket feel.
Different strokes for different folks, but I prefer the OEM shifter.
Hope this helps.

when i ordered my car about 2 month ago they said that porsche took the oem ssk off the option list and that they could put the B&M in for me?? anybody else heard of this??? I test drove a 997 with a oem ssk and it was beautiful.
Singletrack1, I'm glad I got the OEM short shifter after reading your description of the two different setups. I really don't like the notchy feel of aftermarket short shifters. I absolutely love the factory OEM setup. The standard gearbox wasn't bad but this is much better.
Yup. My sales guy brought this to my attention. He told me that you can still get the Porsche SSK, but now it's a dealer installed item not an option.
I wonder why they did this?
I read on this site some time ago that it was because people with the option were frying their clutch too often by shifting without the clutch being completely depressed, as the throw became much quicker the clutch movement was not shortened to match.
I'm still on the fence about which shifter to get B&M or the factory kit, which is the only one I've felt and enjoyed. Perhaps if someone in the Tampa or Gainesville area gets a B&M they would let me see how the shifter feels.

Can't imagine the clutch being affected but certainly the synchros might be getting banged up more often. Have had the B&M in for couple of weeks now and so far it works great!!
jim
I've seen a lot of people mention stuff about premature syncro wear due to short shift kits. I just don't get it. If you wait until the clutch is disengaged why would you wear the syncros any more than with the regular shifter?
The only vehicle I have ever noticed syncro wear in was my Jeep Wrangler, and that thing had the exact opposite of a short shift kit. It was like rowing a boat in comparison.
I put the B&M shifter in last night and I LOVE IT! Installation is pretty straight forward but I also had purchased the evo shift linkage and it would NOT fit on the shifter ball even after almost an hour of hammering... Still, with the Porsche linkage, the shifter feels really good, a lot like the Porsche one that I tried out but a little more shift effort and even more precise shifts, but I bet that goes away with some time I also threw in the Evo V-Flow while I was working. :drivingskid: - Suneet
Couldn't agree more on the B&M shifter upgrade. On the 996s it was even worse (the stock mechanism that is). At least on the 987s/997s the shifter linkage itself doesn't usually break!
That confirms what my dealership told me. The SS is available through Porsche and only dealer installed. It is NOT a B&M shifter. And the warranty (if dealer installed) is still good through Porsche, considering driving habits, etc.
I wanted to install the Schnell SS as it is not quite as short, and less notchy, and retains the same lever position as the the factory stock shifter. But, I haven't due to the warranty concerns.
