to complete the job We just need all the parts to arrive, fit them, reset the wastegates to crack at 14psi with mityvac and a final pressure test, Then datalog the car and get the information over to Deejay Markski for a final tweak to the map.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Evening all, thought I'd share the maintenance work my brother has been doing on my car. Initially it was just to reset the wastegate actuators, change plugs, coil packs and do a pressure test.... It turns out someone had previously had a play with the actuators, sheared off one of the fixing bolts and rammed an over size bolt in the hole, which too had subsequently failed. Consequently the compressor housing had to be removed, cut off the destroyed mounting point, Tig weld it back up grind into shape and then re tap the appropriate thread. in doing this he noticed the bearing cartridge of the turbo had a crack in it.. This resulted in the turbo needing to come off for a full rebuild. You can see the cracks in the picture and how off centre the turbine wheel is in the housing, lucky find, it wouldn't of gone much further. It's basically rotted away. With all this corrosion it all had to be cut off including cutting the oil feed line as the line certainly wasn't coming out of the check valve.. Anyway, parts ordered and with the turbo at the engineering shop I pushed on with the coil packs and plugs and set about doing the pressure test... wouldn't hold a thing. I'd obviously blocked off the open lines with the turbo being removed and pressure tested from the 'Y" pipe, video attached. The #16 check valve had failed and it was full of minor leaks. The video shows just how much boost is lost with a failed valve and subsequently just how hard the turbos have to work to overcome it.. On removing the valve, it was clear someone had been in there before and the plenum connection was cracked, glued and leaking! he got around all of this to complete the pressure test and the engine is now as tight as a drum the intercoolers were pressured tested separately. The balance of the parts are now all ordered and turbo has been delivered. Incidentally the other turbo looks ok for now... to complete the job We just need all the parts to arrive, fit them, reset the wastegates to crack at 14psi with mityvac and a final pressure test, Then datalog the car and get the information over to Deejay Markski for a final tweak to the map. The moral of the story, get under these old cars and see what's going on, this car felt absolutely fine on the road but it clearly wasn't right. Should feel like a different car when I get it back.. Incidentally Deejay has been a huge help, bouncing things off of him. If you don't use him already you should certainly consider it. You'd think him only down the road with the quick response you get. Apologies for the long post, similar to how this quick maintenance job has turned out...

POST 5Original post

Well done, I had similar issues in my TT a few years ago. I wasn't capable of sorting them myself, so had to use my independent garage. You will be astounded at the difference no leaks make, it was like a different car! :thumb:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can't wait hopefully the parts arrive shortly, I haven't really felt the benefits of the mapping with all the issues found!!

POST 7Original post

Very informative - thanks for posting! Who did your turbo reconditioning work? :thumb:

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 9Original post

Craig at TDI is a great guy no BS and straight to the point. I've used him for nearly twenty years now, the only parts re used on Stewart's turbo was the exhaust housing, everything else is new! My car currently runs K16/26 turbos, he's going to be fitting billet wheels for me shortly. He knows these turbos inside out what works and importantly what doesn't. Darren.

POST 10Original post

LONG POST..... Call that a long post... (-: No apologies necessary. I suspect I may never own a Turbo but THANKS for sharing the story and all important pics to add to my understanding and appreciation of possible issues relative to owning and running these very special cars. :worship:

POST 11Original post

They are fantastic cars, the Porsche bargain on the century. Lots of people get put off by anything 'turbo" and the turbos get blamed for everything that's goes wrong, there really not as complicated as they first appear when you open the decklid and with a lowered engine access is actually quite good. Darren

POST 12Original post

Great information, not unlike my own story, I started with a inoperable actuator 🙄 Another positive for Deejay Markski 👍 top man and leading me through this journey. And I have decided to clean, glue and pin all 8 coolant pipes which have a bad reputation for popping out. With a bit of luck and covid restrictions allowing I could make Dinslaken 2021 😀

POST 13Original post

Great work Paul.. That is mission creep! Darren

POST 14Original post

Well it starts as a 'creep' and now has turned into a sunami  :dont know:

POST 15Original post

When I see both 996 and 997 turbo at strong money always surprises me that people do not get this all checked out before buying. You guys okay you know how to fix yourself but thats very expensive and awkward work (rusty bolts) at an indy.
