In the end it needed 1.5L to get it back to 3/4 full, where it was the night before.

The blue and grey smoke on startup seems to be gone since I changed the oil.

Suggestion
I came to a guessed conclusion with my mechanic that if the wrong was used when serviced, it could get into the firing chamber and create the smoke plumes.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I'm new to Porsche. 991.2 C2S, 2016, 52k miles. FSH.
I took the car last week for a good few days bonding session around the Peak District, Wales etc. 800 miles and at the end I checked the oil level. About 0.5L used. Sounds ok to me.
Yesterday I took it on track and did about 90 miles. On the way home the dash said I needed to add some oil. I added 0.5L, still said add more. In the end it needed 1.5L to get it back to 3/4 full, where it was the night before.
Sounds pretty excessive to me?!
Before I go back to the garage has anyone any experience/advise at all?
I can't find a great deal online. I did find something about turbo oil lines and a load of white smoke on start up but I've not seen excessive smoke on start up.
Hi Andy,
I experienced what I considered excessive oil usage on my 2017 991.2 Carrera S in November last year. I think I used 1.5l in under 1000 miles. I had the oil warning light come on in Plymouth just before catching the ferry to France, then it came on again as we crossed the border into Portugal.
One thing I notice both times I topped up as there was an immediate puff of smoke from the exhausts when I started the engine. But subsequent start ups were okay.
I googled the consumption and couldn't seem to find anywhere that said this was a problem, usage seemed to vary.
We carried on with the holiday but somewhere 2 hours east of Madrid on our way back to France while on the motorway, I noticed in the rear view mirror puffs of smoke when I lifted off. I pulled off at the next exit and stopped the car. No warning lights and the oil level said normal, carry on. Started the car and huge plumes of smoke at the back of the car. Switched it off and called for recovery.
Fortunately the car was an approved used car from Porsche so they covered the repatriation of it and taxis flights etc to get us home.
Turns out it was some oil pipes failing and filling the turbos with oil. The pipes and turbos were replaced by Porsche under the approved used warranty.
The continued excessive smoke on start up only happened right at the end when it was clear something was wrong. Prior to that it was just a puff after topping up the oil.
I would certainly get your turbos and oil pipes checked just to rule it out if nothing else. I have no invoice for the work as it was a warranty job but I dread to think of the cost!
Thanks for the reply.
Sounds like I could be at the early stages of the same issue.
I'll get it logged with the garage as a minimum and see if they'll check it out.
My (now sold) 911.2 C2S had a very similar issue. White smoke on startup and high oil consumption. Oil pipes to the turbos were the problem, and one of my Turbos was ruined by the inability to drain oil properly. Warranty sorted it all out, but it was a full engine & gearbox removal so quite an involved fix.
I’m waiting for this to happen as it’s a known issue. Litchfield can give you improved turbos on an exchange basis, but not of relevance if you want to stay 100% OEM.
The other common issue seems to be failure of the water pump.

Seems it is a new turbo needed as you guys had.
Any ideas on the rough lead time for Porsche to sort it? It would be under warranty.
It depends on how busy your OPC is really. The diagnosis and warranty claim approval was painless, but parts needed to be ordered from Germany. From recovery of the car to the OPC through to collection it was about 5 weeks from what I recall.
Have a 2017 911 - 991.2
60250 KMS - Had the same issue twice, once on a hot start and once on a cold start. Huge amounts of white and grey/blue smoke. I contacted the garage I purchased it from and they told me that sometimes this happens to 911's and it's either too full of oil (purchased it fully serviced 200 KMS earlier, so doubt that) or an oil/air separator that can stick.
I removed the oil and got 7.5 Litres out (It can take up to 8.5 Litres, so I am told). It was at its lowest level, so over oiled was obviously not the issue.
I replaced the oil filter and put 7.5 Litres of fresh oil in (Valvoline Synthetic Synpower 5W-40)
When the engine oil temp gets above 90oC, the engine does an oil check and level reset.
The car notified me to add more oil and I added half a litre.
It told me the oil level was ok after adding that
The blue and grey smoke on startup seems to be gone since I changed the oil. I came to a guessed conclusion with my mechanic that if the wrong was used when serviced, it could get into the firing chamber and create the smoke plumes. However, it is not really plausible nowadays surely and the garage I purchased it from, sell all high end cars and would know this surely!
I now have 67000 KMS on the engine and it is looking for more oil. I just put another 0.5 Litres into it and it states its ok again on the oil level indicator.
Experiencing similar problems to what you are mentioning here
Don't know what the end result will be though
