Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello.......and Sorry
I have been meaning to say hello since I rudely stuck my nose into a thread about gear linkages earlir this year. I didn't really have much to say apart from I have owned a '99 C2 in Arctic Silver since July '19 and it's been great. I've covered approx 5500 miles with only a couple of minor glitches, to be expected on any 20yo/122,000 car, and it has been mechanically perfect. It had an IMS upgrade, RMS and clutch 8months/600miles before I bought it.
Now for the issue I'd really like some help with please. If anyone wouldn't mind listening to the video.

Was coming home yesterday, stood at an uphill junction, I heard a slight grinding noise. As I heard it the lights changed and it seemed to go quiet as I let out the clutch. It returned about 30 seconds later for around 20 seconds and again went quiet. I reversed up my drive and left it idling while I opened the garage. The noise returned as I reversed into the garage and I shut it down straight away. I then came out and took the video. All in I think it ran with this sound for just over a minute. Sorry for the story.
Apologies for how short the video is, but I panicked and turned it off while the internals were still internal.
Many thanks,
Jon
Thanks all.
Will check the water pump after work. Are there any aftermarket ones that are to be avoided?
Have a basic diagnostic tool that should be able to show issues when I'm confidant it's not going to do more damage running it.
Once I know the problem, as crap as the video is I'll try to edit the title so may be it'll be helpful to others
When my water pump failed it was kind enough to start leaking which took away the mystery.... I'm guessing they don't always leak but worth a look. The sound it made was an awful clattering.
Also, I ordered a genuine Porsche pump and on inspection it was a Pierburg stamped unit.
Fingers crossed that's all it is. Good luck.
Thanks Mort, about 3-4mm in out play at the top of the pulley.
SeeFourEsse, gave it a wiggle, now there are drips underneath.
Can't feel anything in any other pulleys.
Thanks so much.
If you don't mind, are there any afermarket ones to be avoided, or is the waterpump one of those parts where you pay the money and go to the dealers?
Want to get it done ASAP, as I spent all tuesday evening thinking, "When will I get to drive it again?"
Wotcha dude
Sorry to hear you're having grief.
I've seen reports of the cheap water pumps going wrong but then I don't know if they're the really cheap ones or the likes of Mahle etc which might be just fine.
Genuine one is circa 200 quid from memory.
Hi Arry,
I think we can call that scare No.1.
Got a quote of £304.20 including the gasket. I suppose rather than thinking it's a lot for a water pump, just think its vital part of the engine and its a lot less than what I thought I'd be spending.
For what it's worth, I found a genuine Porsche pump online and rang OPC and they pretty much matched the price... can't remember specifics but it went from somewhere near £300 down to £200 and I could collect it immediately. They can't always budge on price but it's usually worth an ask just in case... and you get a lovely Porsche receipt to add to the stack of other ones for your history file!
If I was doing it again I would probably see how much cheaper a pierburg one is though as they are likely to be the same item, minus the Porsche stamped box and aforementioned receipt.
Low temp thermostat is a popular thing to do whilst you have the pump out and the coolant drained.... I did mine at the same time.
I bought a Pierburg one from eBay (think it was via Autodoc) for around £150. I believe Pierburg were the OE supplier.
From everything I read when I replaced mine there aren't so much makes to avoid but the general advice was to avoid the ones with metal impellers as if the bearings go, as per your old one then they could make a right mess of the block. The OE/Pierburg ones have a composite impeller.
