Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

1

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

Using the same casting for both sides of the engine is an interesting decision.

Leading evidence: 'Use same casting' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use same casting' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When playing around with the engines, I thought it interesting to see how Porsche took the high cost engine from the GT3 and Turbo and cost reduced it and simplified it for the Carrera. So much so that I put a video together to explain the changes. MC

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I was worried it might be a bit dry and factual, but I'm not one for 5 minutes of pointless waffle and I'm interested in the engineering details, both from a performance and a manufacturing/cost point of view. MC

POST 4Original post

Enjoyed that geeky 5 mins :floor: Car manufacturing is for profit lest we forget. But those were obvious benefits to the process with the std carrera engine. Given the displacements are similar what's the key factor that lets the Mezger deliver its horsepower over the C2S motors, revs obviously but is it more efficient because it more complex to make?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There is nothing in the complexity which adds to power, not as far as I can see. The GT3 has better flowing heads, infinitely adjustable inlet cam timing rather than than the two position timing on the Carrera, combined with a better intake and exhaust. All sorts of little bits. MC

POST 6Original post

Some significant improvements from a dfm point of view. Using the same casting for both sides of the engine is an interesting decision. It lengthens the engine a fair amount having two sets of timing chains, but simplifies stock holding and parts ordering. I bet there were some interesting discussions around that particular architecture, but Porsche was in a tight spot back then so savings were paramount. Do the dfi engines have two sets of timing chains? An m96.01/2/3 without the dual timings setup would have avoided many of the ims issues I am sure.

POST 7Original post

Thanks for posting MC, very interesting and well explained. :thumb:
