I have seen them different colours but only used for a few weeks in the winter.

I use a kayak lift for the hardtop and less than $40 CDN (about $10.95 USD).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This question is for those of you who have purchased a hardtop after you bought the cab. I'm in the market for a hardtop and I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy a used one cheap and have it repainted to match my car or take the plunge and buy one off of suncoast that already matches my paint and interior. Has anyone bought the suncoast hardtop? At the moment they are discounted which is why I would even consider buying one.
For those of you who have repainted how much did it cost?
Thanks for any input.
How long will it be on for, will you have a storage place for it thats safe.
Mine is the correct silver but it is scratched on the top - careless previous owner. I have seen them different colours but only used for a few weeks in the winter.
Really its your call new Vs respray of an original used

I'm surprised that you can buy a new hardtop and specify the colors. If you have a common paint color you'll probably be able to find a used one in that color for sale.
The cab is lapis blue, I've seen other shades of blue but not sure how close they would be. seems that most are black at least the ones on eBay. Makes sense since most cars are black.
Suncoast has the hardtop for 2295 which is a good deal compared to the ~ $6000 they were originally( May have been $5000). Still a lot of cash but at least it would match color (if it's available) and it would come with the tools / attachments. They say it fits 05 - 12 so I might need to check if there were any improvements with the 997 top.

There was one lapis blue for sale in Houston CL for a while, but it looks like it must have sold.
I have bought 2 of them used. No problems. Just make sure the bayonette type matches your vehicle.
Check your option codes. If your 996 has the option code 750 Without Hardtop, it does not matter which top you buy as long as it is 1999-2008 or 2009 I forget. All tops fit all cabs in those years. Depending on the top you buy it will depend on which latch you need to buy for your car. Thus most likely if your car has never had a hardtop you will need to buy the latches and install those. The bayonet latches cost approximately $450. I heard the later screw in one costs more. I just attached a used hard top that had the bayonet latches so the part numbers listed below are the parts I had to buy to attach it. You do not need to buy the $36 hex wrench. PM me if you would like to discuss because I just went through what you are about to do 10 days ago.

See if you can buy the brackets from the car as well if he's not wanting a hardtop. They'll match the mounting pins on the top and save you some $. Offer a ridiculously low amount and buy them if you can. Took me 20 minutes to install my new brackets - super easy when you've got clear instructions.

The mounts changed with the introduction of the 997 (I believe in 2005) and are screw-in style instead of the original bayonet types.
^ #1 is the newer style and #2 is the original
Found my hardtop in LA for my 2004 with the correct Midnight Blue Metallic paint and Savannah Beige interior. Top had some scratches but for $500 I was happy to find the combo I needed. Made for a great road trip at the end of summer to go get it. Still smiling from the PCH drive...
One more reminder: verify that the window defroster works. Also ask if seller has the front latch cover and square plastic grilles that cover the mounts once top is on. Best of luck.
I made my own hoist with less than $100 from home depot. If you can imagine it.....cleat on my garage wall to tie of rope. Goes to a pulley on the ceiling and then two pulleys to (don't remember what it's called, block and tackle? but cuts the load in half and takes twice as much rope?) Goes to three points: A hook on the back. The other two involve a galvanized piece of pipe that I believe is fencing material (fence, not sword) wrapped with pipe insulation with carabiners securing it on either side in the front. That is, a piece of pipe with insulation to pad over it on the front on either side, a hook in the back. All three points go to pulleys on top of the top and then the ceiling, tied off to a cleat. You can lower it by yourself. Yes, if you look they are listed for $1000 but only go for $500.
I'm in Texas so we have too many pretty winter days to justify using it. It has only been on the car a few times. It is generally something I hit my head on while moving around the garage.
Just took my lazy but out to take a pic. Shows a little of the pipe in the front and the rear rope just goes to a hook on the center back of the top. Notice the dust. I'm going to market the top some day as a "barn find".
That's a pretty fancy hoist. If I ever make a decision to buy a hardtop and own a house I'll put one of those up.
Now that it's closer to spring it's hard to justify a hardtop. Might buy one closer to winter. Kind of pointless to buy one when it will just be sitting in my garage for the nest four months.
I use a kayak lift for the hardtop and less than $40 CDN (about $10.95 USD). Easy as pie. If the hardtop wasn't on the car now I'd post a pic of it in action.

Installment advice. I have a 2005 996TT with screw-type receivers for the hardtop and now have a 1999 hardtop with bayonet-style mounts. Obviously need to change one side to match the other. Is either way easier to install or less expensive for parts? What benefit was Porsche's change to the screw-type system?
