My 2006 Cayman is turning 2 in exactly 10 days. I bought it a little over a month ago, and shortly thereafter the "service in 30 days" light came on.
When I bought the car, the dealer had already performed the service (oil change, etc.) and since it had less than 6k miles this service was dictated by time, not mileage.
So, when I saw the service light I realized they must have forgotten to reset it, and I had planned on taking it in to have the light reset before the 30 days was up.
I drove the car on Wednesday, and it was at 12 days, nothing was out of the ordinary.
I start the car up today, it's at 10 days and then the CEL came on.
Now, what I'm wondering is, is it possible that the CEL comes on at 10 days before service?
I have read many threads on here, and also checked the owners manual, and all things indicate that, no, the CEL should not come on just because service is due on 10 days.
Can anyone confirm this? Is the CEL due to the 10 day countdown for service, or is this just a really funny coincidence?
At any rate, I'm trying to schedule a service appointment right now. I've tried two different dealers and haven't gotten very far.
Pasadena dealer-- service and main phone line from website do not work? Beverly Hills-- I was told to leave a voicemail for someone? Hopefully I will hear back from someone soon.
From what I have read on the forum, it sounds like common causes for CEL (on many 06's) is a failed catalytic converter or O2 censor, however I noticed in most of these cases it was happening at lower mileage than 6k.
Any thoughts?
Must be a coincidence. I went past the two year mark since I'd done my own service and got no CEL but did get the reminder.
Thanks for your input!
Yeah... that's what I was afraid of.
What a coincidence!
I have an appointment for service on Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to report back at that time with some good news!
I was told that it is still safe to drive the car, and most likely this is a censor related issue.
So, for an update on this...
Saturday, the CEL disappeared, which I thought was a bit strange. Today I took the car in for service, and they found out-- based on the fault code(s)-- that that the issue is related to emissions/catalytic converter/muffler. So they are overnighting another catalytic converter, and the car should be as good as new by tomorrow afternoon, assuming nothing else comes up.
I also found out that the car had been in for service before. It had part of the (or perhaps the entire) clutch mechanism replaced at 1000 miles. I've also read on here about some faulty clutch plates and whatnot (?) on some of the 2006 models.
So, that's all good to know! I had been curious about the car's service history and what factory fixes/recalls it may have been subject to.
I'll make another update once I have the car back.
I have a question on the check brake pad light coming on. I just had the car in for a tech inspection and they indicated that I still had a lot of pad left however, this morning driving through a huge rain storm the service brake pad light came on. I tried resetting by turning the car off and back on but still the same message. Any clues as to whether the water could have caused it to throw that code?
Update:
I have my car back and am glad to be rid of the BMW loaner!
They replaced the catalytic converter, reset my service light. And, somehow, set my clock forward an hour? I think it may have been a consequence of resetting the service light, because my lifetime fuel consumption was also reset.
They were unable to reproduce the "squeaking" noise that comes from inside the cabin sometimes, but they said to bring it back if I heard the noise again. I heard it on the way home-- but there is no way I was gonna go back in traffic only to have it stop squeaking by the time I got to the service center.
Unfortunately, I forgot to tell them *not* to give my car a bath. I had just paid good money for a clay bar/hand wash/hand wax on Saturday. It's my fault for not remembering to ask them not to wash it!
I quickly looked over the car before driving off of the service lot, and everything seems to be in good condition. It does look like someone unscrewed my license plate screws and then didn't screw them all the way back in (they're kind of sticking out now)... but I just got my permanent plates yesterday, so I'll be switching the paper plate out anyway.
The people at Beverly Hills Porsche were great, I had good communication with them while they had my car, and my car was ready when they promised (ahead of schedule, even). I plan to have my car serviced there from now on.
